Independent, well informed juries are essential to justice. Whether it's replacing juries with a single judge, or trying to send barristers to prison for telling juries the whole truth it's wrong. Sign the petition. you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/sa...

Save Britain's Juries
Juries have had the right to acquit based on their conscience for centuries. Now, a barrister is facing jail just for mentioning it in court. Add your name to help save Britain's juries.

Peter is absolutely right. Juries provide public engagement in the justice system. 12 people from different backgrounds come together in a micro democracy to decide if someone is innocent or guilty. It's not the state marking it's own homework, it's the people having the final say. We need juries!

Jason from Brighton hits the nail on the head. "Public participation in jury trials is really important." We trust the decisions of the court system because *we* make the decisions of the court system. The jury is us, and the jury decides! No juries, No justice, No trust. #thejuryalliance

Retired Magistrate Jim Newmark describes Judge only trials as “Rough Justice”. We all know that you can't replace 12 lifetimes knowledge and experience with a single judge. And the Institute for Government has shown that the change will reduce the backlog by less than 2%. #thejuryalliance

It cannot be right that you would leave the fate of someone to a single judge when they were facing 3 years in prison. A single person will never deliver the same quality of judgement as 12. People need justice, People need juries. www.thecanary.co/uk/news/2026...

The power should be with people. With the jury. Not with a state appointed judge.
Why should we trust them with our vote, when they don't trust us as jurors?

Juries are the people, juries are us.

No juries, no justice, no trust.

Professor R. Vogler, says of the government jury attack, "It's just taking away something which is fundamental to the system.". We agree justice need everyday people, justice needs juries.

They're happy to talk to us when they want our votes, but they don't want us involved in the justice system. Local courts should be full of local jurors making decision on local cases. At the local elections ask the candidates if they trust you, if they trust juries.
WHY DON'T THEY TRUST US?

Juries are everyday people; rich and poor, young and old, men and women, black and white...

Why do they want to replace us with a single judge?
No juries, no justice, no trust.

1/ What is jury equity? Jury equity is the principle that juries have the power to acquit a defendant even where they think that the defendant has broken the law, and the defendant has no legal defence to the charge.
What is the story with jury equity?

Removing juries won't fix the backlog. Between 2010 and 2019 half the courts in England and Wales were closed. Since 2019 the number of sitting days has been artificially limited by the government. This year the judges said they could do 113,000 days the government is allowing them 112,250.
IT WON'T FIX THE BACKLOG...
Factors government reports, barristers, judges, victims, witnesses and defendants say cause the court backlog;
Underfunding, prison transfer delays, broken heating, closed courts, shortage of prosecutors, technical faults, poor maintenance, CPS delays, shortage of sitting days, complexity of cases, staff shortages, cuts in legal aid, outdated systems, prisons capacity...

Things no-one has ever mentioned,
Juries

For hundreds of years we have had an adversarial justice system in Britain. A prosecutor, accuses. A defendant explains. A judge ensures a fair trial. And a jury of 12 ordinary people decide innocence or guilt. A jury is society judging itself. #itsnotaboutthebacklog #nojurynojusticenotrust
A picture of lady justice. Over the top are the words, "The Jury Decides. For over 800 years we have trusted the jury. Twelve lifetimes wisdom, knowledge and experience. A single judge cannot replace that. https://thejuryalliance.uk"
