The government is cutting the carbon tax on home heating oil and gas, and shelving planned increases for the rest of its term. The move will take some pressure off households, but it has been strongly criticised by environmental groups, who said the government has “given up on climate”.

The price of a packet of 20 cigarettes will rise by €1 from midnight – pushing a box to over €20 and breaking the barrier of €1 per cigarette. Vapes are also to be levied with a greater amount of tax and will increase by 20c per ml. jrnl.ie/7183736
