I stopped stressing over bad reviews and decided to just laugh at them. You can make your best work and someone will still say it ruined their weekend. Learn what you can and keep creating. A Hard Place is now on tubi and amazon. Watch it and leave a review good or bad.

If you’re chasing money or fame, filmmaking isn’t the path. There are easier ways to live. But if you can’t not do this, if it keeps you up at night, go all in. Make stuff, fail, learn, repeat. The ones who make it aren’t the most gifted. They’re the ones who never stop creating.

Gonna ramble a bit today. Some thoughts on how we talk about success and failure in film. It’s not just algorithms or luck. We have more control than we think. Streaming isn’t killing indie film. It’s changing it. Stop blaming and start creating. youtu.be/8LkSqt-5mYo

A Hard Place was one of those films that reminded me why I do this. Emotional. Messy. Real. Huge thanks to the cast and crew, and to Jo Jo Payne and Carmen Seacrest—first time working with both and they killed it. And yes, that’s me pointing at my script. Now streaming on Tubi and Amazon.

John Charles Dickson in A Hard Place… man, the guy just refuses to blend in. Cast full of killers and he’s still out here stealing scenes like they’re snacks at craft services. Every time he shows up the energy shifts.

Jack Berner is the definition of an actor’s actor. On Apex he was at the gym before 12-hour days, script open, drilling a page-long monologue until he could pick it up word for word from anywhere. Always prepared, always game for new ideas. Total pro. Also, Elizabeth’s alright too.

The J Horton @thejhorton.bsky.social · 28/09/2025

King Jeff is the real deal. Nuanced performance, super prepared, legit charisma, and maybe the lowest-maintenance actor I’ve ever worked with. I’ve lived with Stan in my head for years, and in The Apex Predators Club Jeff delivered him fully.

Just over 2 weeks til The Apex Predators Club shoots. Every film I make, fear hits hard at the end. Not weakness. Proof it matters. You carry it and move anyway. That’s courage.

I can’t stress this enough… in the streaming era, your poster art is king. It’s more important than your trailer. It’s the first thing people see, the thing that makes them click. If it’s bad, they scroll. If it’s good, they watch. Simple as that.

062

The J Horton @thejhorton.bsky.social · 10/08/2025

Having Felissa Rose in your indie film is like having a secret weapon. Horror fans see her face and stop scrolling. Of course the movie still has to be good… but Felissa makes sure they give it a shot. #IndieFilmLife #FelissaRose #AHardPlaceMovie

Anxiety has been peaking this week. I’ve had it most of my adult life. I manage it with exercise, diet, meditation, therapy, and a bunch of other stuff. Things are actually good right now, but that doesn’t mean it disappears. Just a reminder you’re not alone.
