There's a difference between getting a feeling from a piece of work based on your initial reaction and critically looking at a piece and analyzing for the emotion the artist is eliciting from the work. I'm not saying don't feel. I'm saying a singular feeling(reaction) doesn't make it a critique.

ohmigosh. I just cleaned up half of my studio searching for the packaging to put the coloring bookmarks into. Only to discover I had already put them into a neat little drawer NEXT to where they normally go.

I said you don't critique art with feelings by reaction. If you cannot discern between a feeling, and providing context for the emotion of a piece, then you are amplifying why it is so critical that artists seek constructive critique. And those not asked should not provide.

As the popular saying goes: Opinions are like assholes. Everyone has them. So if you weren’t requested to critique, don’t provide. And if you have a negative opinion, keep it to yourself. Forcing your contextual reasoning that all reaction is good onto another artist is inappropriate.

You’re providing two cans of worms. I’ll address the later Feelings, by reaction, have no place in constructive critique. Effective critique moves past a feeling and provides an appropriate objective and/or subjective(to a degree) observation. It is also a conversation. Not a single comment.

Because all critiques aren’t created equally. Constructive critique is done amongst peers in an environment that is conducive to the artist and their method. If an artist has not asked you, your opinion is not wanted and should not be given.

This isn’t a trick question. An artist is allowed to update and rework their own work. Creativity is not a monolith. Just because they announce a change doesn’t allow others to openly critique. If you aren’t asked to critique you don’t provide. Period.

I feel childlike. The fear, anxiety I had as a kid that people would leave. Be too busy. Deal with your feelings alone. Self regulate. And I wish the childlike feelings were of wonder and amazement. I’m on the wrong side of the looking glass.

It’s a weird world we live in. I have friends and family who are seeing the fruits of their labor rewarded. I see acquaintances succeeding. It makes me so happy for them. Like I’m trying to siphon some of their spilled over joy to keep me going. And I see just as many struggling.
