Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 03/10/2026Hi, friends. Just now I learned what Alt + PageUp and Alt + PageDn do when I'm working with a spreadsheet, and it has changed my life. (That last clause should really be in all caps.) 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 30/09/2026Right. Ken Paxton is the last guy who should be blaming Trump for his problems. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 24/09/2026Bluesky is not a place where I want to have an argument. It goes no better than the Argument Sketch from Monty Python. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 22/09/2026Dreams and fragments of memory: I had a dream where I was in a specific building of a certain name. It took me a long time to remember, after I woke up, that I once knew someone who lived there, and that I had been in the building. Decades ago. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 20/09/2026Most people react to this as if the poll responses demonstrate stupidity or a sense of superiority. I don't think that's so. I would say, whether I want a factory job or not, if 33 percent of Americans think a factory job would be good for them, it might be good if more factory jobs existed. 011
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 20/09/2026If you subscribe or want to subscribe to Robert Wright's Nonzero newletter, here's a iink to the article I read today: Always Forget open.substack.com/pub/nonzero/...open.substack.comAlways ForgetMy own personal takeaway from 9/11 010
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 17/09/2026It's hard to add value to this comment thread already. However, I approve of "busses", because it rhymes with "fusses". "Buses" should rhyme with "fuses". 110
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Might as well tell everyone they should never leave their homes. Trump could have done tremendous good for America that way in 2015. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 04/09/2026I'm glad they included that in the story, but the central information that they were slow to get around to is that he was arrested for blowing off legal proceedings regarding child support. 110
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 30/08/2026I haven't spent a second in Germany, but I'd try Apfelscheibeherbstschmerz. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I don't think the civil/criminal distinction matters to everyone. To some, a person coming into this country without an official citizenship promise doesn't belong here. So, the undocumented should be escorted out if necessary. But people are now seeing how nasty that can be. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 26/08/2026I'll step back from my hasty guess that most voters approve of deporting immigrants who have committed no crime. I think approval of that deportation policy has dropped below fifty percent. I still don't think most people are outraged about it, although very many are. 100
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 25/08/2026Interesting trend, but I think most American voters are happy to see this, even if they are turning on Trump for other reasons. I wouldn't say the arrest numbers are outrageous. It might be harder to quantify the disruptive effect the arrests are having on the economy and on many families. 200
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 08/08/2026I agree. I like Ross Douthat, but he admits here that he regards the liberal establishment as an enemy. But I always thought the establishment could foster a workable contest between the political sides. Trump was never going to do that. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 03/08/2026Progressive activists can say a variety of bad things, some of them privately. 010

Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 28/07/2026I know it's the internet and all, but if you're a Democrat who doesn't happen to be a United States senator, your response is not at issue here. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 23/07/2026Okay, I read it. The big difference is that Nixon had a powerful opposition party in control of Congress. Good things were possible, bad things constrained. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 23/07/2026I'll read Matt Lewis's article. Going in, I think Nixon was bad, and Trump is far worse. 100
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 20/07/2026Definitely pronounce to suit the pun, even if you pronounce it differently in other contexts. Like code switching. 001
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 20/07/2026I guess these PACs know how to rig a poll. I'd at least want the pollster to publish the results on their own web sites, with complete details. Who knows how they're wording the questions or judging who's a likely voter, if not outright fabricating results? 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 17/07/2026Show up at 9:40. Tell them you assumed they meant 7:40 Extra Morning Time, which is the time zone you belong to, as their records should indicate. 010
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 16/07/2026Of course, such common sense, applied in the other direction, would also solve the opposite supposed problem of having Standard Time all year. 100
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 13/07/2026You shouldn't have called it a fact. You activated fact-checking behavior. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 12/07/2026This all seems consistent with the idea that people start out less trustful, and they gain trust as they go through their teens and twenties, and then they level out. No? 100
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 09/07/2026Establishments can do the right thing, even when noisy people ask them to do the wrong thing. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 07/07/2026I wonder now if this teacher had any Bircher sympathies, or was on friendly enough terms that he chose to do them the favor of letting them in our classroom. Did their ultra-right ideas take root with any of my classmates? Or, were we actually being inoculated and protected against such extremism? 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 07/07/2026At my high school, in the 1970s, the social studies teacher regularly brought in guests from fringey political movements. Some were there to spread the ideas favored by the John Birch Society. The Birchers were received politely, but were ridiculous, and our teacher never seemed to take their side. 100
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 06/07/2026Is it too late for Maine Republicans to drop Susan Collins from the ballot and replace her with Graham Platner? He seems like the kind of guy they cotton to. 000

Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 03/07/2026You'd think a good musician would have said "We'll think of something else to put in there." But before they had a chance, this was recorded and turned into gold. 010
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 26/06/2026I imagine Trump would like to give Nixon a pardon. And give him $2B compensation. 000
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 19/06/2026There's a typo in one of those screenshots. The New Republic site now has "braved frigid temperatures," not "break frigid temperatures". 020
Brokedown Palace @thejerome.bsky.social · 19/06/2026The rationale for RCV voting depends on this kind of result being at least imaginable (to dissuade candidates from running polarizing campaigns that don't bring together 50 percent of the voters). If you expect the first-round plurality winner to always be elected, why bother with RCV? 100
