Love that the title comes a phrase one of the authors regularly uses in times of deep crisis: "Let this radicalize you rather than lead you to despair."
Let This Radicalize You, by Kelly Hayes and Mariame Kaba

i would not be surprised if toronto votes in brad bradford because this city not only deserves a wishy-washy cartoon villain-named mayor, but happily voted in inept and corrupt mayors for the past 15 years, only discovering the courage to demand better when the racialized woman became mayor lol

better if you understand that in the aftermath of HOW TO, because the film references the show and its production directly and indirectly. Still, I liked the efficiency of “scaffolding,” when CONCRETE could have easily trimmed about 20 minutes

HISTORY OF CONCRETE is a comedic video essay following John Wilson trying to adjust to life post-HOW TO, using concrete as a loose skeleton for an at times meandering meditation on ephemerality and the illusion of concreteness. I watched the HOW TO episode on scaffolding after, and CONCRETE works

like, it’s been frustrating to have these screenings always sold out, even if i’m willing to pay for them at regular price. truly the worst edging experience

The more I see the media telling people to not see it, the more I think it should be seen. Perfect cheap Tuesday movie

Yet, I also felt a bit nostalgic that such a big star and a name director put out a (more or less unsuccessful) big swing, because it reminded me of the films we regularly had in the late 1990s and early 2000s, in this era of second screen slop

DIGGER is a movie that almost feels like it is scared that if it is too entertaining, too skillfully absorbing, then it might somehow make for a cheapened or inauthentic messenger. It has potentially interesting ideas it never follows through on, and the ones it does tackle don’t have enough bite

HELL’S KITCHEN is proof that when you have Broadway-calibre performers it can cover a lot of sins that become much clearer with even a talented-but-not-stratospheric cast. A musical about artistry oddly uninterested in any of the actual process of becoming an artist

so this feels sort of strategically clever: no moves so large as to unite the voters against the foreign force, instead just slowly turning up the heat through higher gas and diesel prices to lean things Dem without allowing direct causation

Totally, either have it all included, or go the British route and have everything free for everyone except for the special exhibitions. But this monstrosity, awful

wait, the ROM is now charging a dynamic base admission ($26+) PLUS a surcharge of $9 (each!!) for current exhibitions?! holy shit, that’s egregious

beyond this tragedy, i think about how toronto has become so expensive the artists have moved out or, like, been absorbed into tech company HR teams. back-then toronto would have scrappy plays, art shows, performances at divey bars bringing awareness and fostering community around issues like this

Jaime Woo @thejaimewoo.bsky.social · 03/10/2026
I still think most things are too pricey for their value (trendy plastic crap and designer clothes and apparel are two examples that come to mind) but that plane ticket to your (actual, once in a lifetime) dream destination is never gonna get any cheaper lol

I’m not a financial advisor but if they’re planning to inflate away their debt, then honestly don’t sweat your latte and whatever small luxuries (nice smelling soaps, shoes that don’t pinch your feet) give your joy and make your day better because it’ll be “cheap” within a year or two lol

LOST IN TRANSLATION holds up less and less with each viewing. I forgot there’s a scene where the doctor speaks Japanese and the girl has no idea what he’s saying, and you’re supposed to be like WOW, TOKYO IS WILD. And Bill Murray’s character is a rich actor so, like, hire a fucking translator lol

i am sure this exists when travelling to, for example, tokyo, but the cultural behaviour of feigned politeness toward foreigners shields much of that

i am not an expert on london by any means, but this trip i felt the classism play out where if retail and service industry people feel you are not in (or, rather, performing) the right class, they will act unfriendly to punish your trespassing of norms. exhausting

the middling, forced cheers when zuck announced it captures this moment. sure, some people will enthusiastically embrace tech for tech’s sake, but this isn’t 2008 or 2018 anymore. hard to muster excitement when these companies are so malicious

i need the city transit nerds to explain to me what happens to the TTC if there’s a fuel crisis. i know diesel-running buses would be greatest affected, but what would be the likeliest plan of action?

still thinking of the relatively affordable cafe run by friendly stoners (think breckin meyer in clueless) open from 8 to 4 and wondering if toronto could ever sustain something like that without it becoming a trendy mess

i spent a lot of the pandemic visiting st catharines and there’s a lot to like about it but it’s a solid all-around city rather than one that pushes anything new for canada (let alone the world) but i’ll let you figure out who thinks a city with 16% racialized and 3.5% indigenous people is “cool”
010
Jaime Woo @thejaimewoo.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
ok, so time out has listed st. catharines as the 9th coolest neighbourhood in the world, which, i’m sorry, even as someone who likes the city knows it’s not true but what makes it laughable is describing it as located between toronto and hamilton, which is incredibly wrong
Located between Toronto and Hamilton (of
Heated Rivalry fame), Downtown St.
Catharines is home to Montebello Park, one of the few places in Canada designed by Frederick Law Olmsted (the visionary behind New York City's Central Park). And the neighbourhood is shaped by its rich history, particularly its ties to the Underground Railroad. This year's Emancipation Day STC celebrations included a special downtown community event marking the 175th anniversary of Harriet Tubman's arrival in St. Catharines, where she lived for nearly a decade.a map of hamilton, toronto, and st. catharines

we have now reached the point where for a solo passenger taking the train from toronto to montreal is just about the price of gas driving, wowza mind you, it often takes longer on the train with frequent delays, everything’s outdated, and you can’t even refill water easily on most cars soooo
