Mouse having a break (Mouse thinks it's well earned) for a couple of weeks so no brand new material. But she'll be RTing and commenting and will be back. Forget her not!🐭 Nave through chancel arch #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

North porticus, north east corner #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire Stone basin with moulded corners. Badly worn. Stem square section and is grooved with graffiti cross. No base or plinth. Basin and shaft weren't born together one pre-conquest the other Norman #FontsOnFriday

You can see more if it's broken... Here you can see the stone courses corresponding to base and capital and the vertical and horizontal lines where the pilaster and string course have been hacked away #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire #StLaurenceDecoration

How are these arches made? Time to zoom in. A narrow course of masonry corresponds to the capital and base from which they were cut. The pilaster is inserted into a vertical channel. The arch is cut in relief from the stones above #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire #StLaurenceDecoration

Each elevation of the nave and chancel of the church of #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire is decorated with a blind arcade. There are two styles; solid arch (shown left) and circular strip of masonry (shown right). These in themselves vary slightly #StLaurenceDecoration

Chancel, south elevation #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire Single light with circular head and deep splay. An external splay would tend to suggest a Saxon opening. Saxon lights were double splayed, internal and external and would be unglazed #WindowsOnWednesday

Time for a #NerdyMouseAlert. Look away now if you don't like minute technical detail. A pilaster strip sits in a channel in the wall. It may be laid with each stone course or cut in later #PilasterStrip #StLaurenceDecoration #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

The vertical, very slight projection from this wall's surface is a pilaster strip or lesene (different from a pilaster which has a base and capital) #PilasterStrip. It is a feature of both Saxon and Norman architecture #WallsOnWednesday #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire

The chancel #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire The walls are testament to myriad changes over centuries that forgot this was once a Saxon church, and removal of windows and doors of the Victorian 'return to the original' Stand here alone no matter how long you have to wait

What remains of the church of #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire are the nave and chancel (shown photograph left) and a single porticus to the north of the nave. The building's origin and purpose were seemingly lost until C19 having been incorporated into a school and dwelling

Welcome to the church of St. Laurence , Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. The only church Mouse has visited more than once and with good reason. Said to be almost entirely Saxon, although Mouse had her doubts. Mouse wonder if she'll change her mind #StLaurenceBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire
From the south showing nave to the left, with two large buttresses, and chancel to the right. The building is perhaps most noticeable for its height for a single stage. However this is typical of the Saxon stone church. A door sits between the two buttresses. Nave and chancel each have a circular headed single light

And as Mouse move on, what of the church of the #HolyTrinityBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire? If you wanted a church where you could see the key features of a medieval church from Romanesque to Gothic choose here. The lighting though is awful. Mouse award 4/5 #MusVisit🐭🐭🐭🐭

A full day late but time for Mouse to yell #FontsMeanFarewell (with just a trace of Saturday's Prosecco still racing through her veins). Good job she only has to cross the road to visit the next church on Mouse's #ScamperUpTheSomersetAvon. One of THE most photographed and debated
Foregrounded and partially obscured by a stone wall with a hedge growing above it, the gable end of a tall stone building. An arcade of six circular arches is visible half way up the building. The central two bays are glazed, the pair either side are blind

Stair turret. Nave projection #HolyTrinityBradfordOnAvon #Wiltshire for #AdoorableThursday The masonry in which this planked door is set looks Norman but that would mean it predates the tower. So let's say the circular arch doorway is 'Norman Style'. Lighting is 'Prison Style'

Anne and Mary are depicted under a cusped #Ogee arch against an ochre tiled background. Around this niche there re the remains of #FictiveMasonry, the verticals double lined.
