The worst thing that ever happened to education in America was when leveling ended. No child got the necessary attention to their specific needs when everyone had the same assignments. Bored, confused, stressed kids make for mediocre outcomes even with great teachers.

Not even mildly surprised. Ten years in Western Pennsylvania was a brutal reality check for lack of acceptance after 19 years in Massachusetts. Texas got worse after I left and now I fear for my high school friends who stayed who are in the LGBTQIA community.

I’m so sorry that happened. I was there in the late 80s and early 90s, so maybe the culture had shifted by then. In high school, the Young Republicans called the Young Democrats “communists” and the YD called the YR “autocrats”, so I can see college being rougher and even less correct.

That must have been more common on the Cambridge side of the River. In seven years at Boston University, the only person we ever called a racist was John Silber, and wasn’t for his moderate to liberal political views. It was because he actively disliked and shut down any questioning of policy.

I wrote a paper on biological warfare in high school wherein the possibility of an enhanced variant of Y. pestis played a big part in my conclusion that research should be internationally regulated in perpetuity. That was 41 years ago…

Putin isn’t trying to rebuild the Communist regime of the USSR. He is trying to recreate the Russian Empire, which was autocratic and oligarchic. The Empire doesn’t require the trappings of democracy the way a Communist Party-run government does.

No, it’s not. My oncologist was awesome about it all, especially guiding me to non-HRT treatment that worked. He said my brain would catch up with my body at the age of have ordinarily gone through the process and that I wouldn’t be imagining a return of symptoms. It’s here. I’m good thanks to him!

Chernobyl and the Challenger were harbingers of the technological dangers to come, I think; at first slow development and the aversion of Y2K downplayed dangers but rapid growth of robotics, social media, and now AI are finally making many of our early fears realistic.

To be clear, there is denominationalism in the Texan religion of football. Mixed marriages aren’t uncommon, often made possible by joint love—or loathing—of the Dallas Cowboys. Only Red Sox Nation is more dedicated a communion than the collective football religion in Texas.

I 100% agree that we have no immigration problem at all. However, “illegals” has been a noun in espionage for a century or more, referring to spies in-country without diplomatic cover from their country of origin. I think that’s a subliminal part of the use of the word in this propaganda, sadly.

My parents paid a total of $7 out of pocket for their medical care between 2012 and 2023 when my mother died because of Medicare, government BCBS Medicare Supplemental, and Tricare. The $7? A miscoded day of TV during a hospital stay. My dad earned it over 40.5 years. He said everyone deserves it.

LULAC got its start in what I consider my hometown. It funded the building of the house I co-own with my brother as away to integrate what was at the time one of the nicest neighborhoods in Corpus Christi. The contractor screwed LULAC over on materials and compliance. A$k me how I know $$$$

The exception might be if you can be called to jury duty because you live in a jurisdiction as an undergrad. Then maybe voting in city elections would make sense. Boston did that to me in 1991 and it messed up my Texas voter registration for 1992 🥴
