754 to go It's a long time that something really shocked me that much, & we are living through shocking shite. I wonder how we will come back. It's not just accountability. It's education, it's media, it's respect for the society you live in, respect for other human beings- basic moral stuff.

Hours later, the story lingers. Who wanted this? Who feeds of this? Who enjoys this? And why. One life. One effin life to bring misery to the people. I do understand a League of Wonderwomen or Gentlemen. But to pursue to be a member of the League of Sociopaths?

One of the most appalling stories I have read. Authoritarian banana republic. This is what it is. How can this be reversed and then safeguarded in the future? Besides that the people responsible need to be hold accountable!

It’s not really possible to teach current events, but we should be able to compare. And comparing demands knowledge. These parents were afraid of loosing what they define as the correct knowledge. One parent said that they needed to set their kid straight afterward. After a 15 min talk?

I also went to talk in person with the teacher, to make sure that he knows that his teaching of current events is necessary and appropriate. I am (East)German after all, stuff likes this hits home hard.

I am so sorry to hear & read about this. Bc I was concerned that the loud people would push the teacher out, I wrote the admin as well, just with an opposite opinion (which I believe is the silent majority’s view, maybe I am naive believing it).

Some parents started a witch hunt by complaining to the school admin about the teacher bc a history teacher should not talk about current events. It was one of the most bizarre things I have experienced.

When the US bombed the school in Iran, my son‘s middle school history teacher had a discussion with his students about it. My son said it was all about facts and everyone discussing the event and implications. Well, the WhatsApp chat of parents blew up afterwards.

This dynamic creates a vicious circle. Structural weakness and rising AfD election results are leading to even more people emigrating, especially the young, educated – and women. Research shows that there is now a surplus of men, especially in rural eastern German areas, with the AfD deliberately playing on this aspect with narratives about migrants taking women away from Germans. Another effect is that there is less influx, also and especially of migrants – they are hardly represented in regional AfD strongholds.

Franka @thefranka.bsky.social · 22/08/2026
The connection between demography and AfD approval is multi-layered and well researched. A shrinking, aging population is causing regions to become increasingly structurally weaker. Less is being invested in line with demand: in local transport, in daycare centers and schools, in libraries and swimming pools. The result is the much-described feeling of being left behind, which makes people susceptible to populism and extremism.

Die Zweitstimme is more important. If needed, people split their vote, i.e. you can vote for your fav being in your area, and still vote against her/his party in general.

Last, my home state. Short explainer for voting in Germany (not sure if you know), each person has two votes. Erststimme, your first vote goes to a person in your area directly. If one wins her/his area, one goes directly to the Bundestag. Zweitstimme (more important), this is for the party you like

this hamster wheel of time. How can I feed my family? In East Germany it’s mostly - young men and my parent’s generation. The older generation is more of the (sarcastic) “bored, nobody after me” generation- older East German’s are economically ok. Bc they always figured a way out of misery.
