I learned something new today. www.gibmuseum.gi/our-history/...
In 711 AD, Berber troops from North Africa, under their leader Tarik ibn-Ziyad, landed at the foot of the Rock setting the Muslim conquest of Iberia into action. The modern name Gibraltar is a derivation of the older name ‘Jebel Tarik’, meaning Tarik’s Mountain. Apart from a brief period 1309-1333, the Muslims occupied Gibraltar for over 750 years, until finally ousted by the Catholic Monarchs in 1462 during the eighth siege of Gibraltar which formed part of the Reconquest. Surviving structures from this period include parts of the Line Wall, Moorish Castle and the Moorish Baths located within the Gibraltar National Museum building.

I assume everyone who cares about ocean conservation and endangered species knows about the Maugean Skate, a Critically Endangered species who lives in one part of one harbor and could go extinct in the next few years if we don’t act? 🧪🦑🌎🐠🦈 www.abc.net.au/news/2024-05...

Salmon farms are this species' main extinction threat. But have the farms changed – or just kept going?
Scientists last year raised the alarm — twice — about the fate of Tasmania's endangered Maugean skate after its population was found to have declined by 47 per cent. But while the salmon industry main...

I generally favor more universal programs because they are historically harder to defund. Then, if balancing the budget becomes an issue, raising taxes/ closing loopholes for billionaires could more than make up for it on the back end. But the general concept is a good one.

My tax money already goes to subsidize maize monocultures that displace native ecosystems and result in exorbitant amounts of corn syrup in foods, why can it not be used to fund education instead?

It should not be $2,000. It should be $4,000 minimum, tied to inflation. And universal because universal programs always seem to last longer.

Even cloud seas have rising tides it seems.
A desert scrub hillside is visible in the foreground, and behind it, an expanse of clouds covers the Mojave Desert. To the left, a finger of the Sierra Nevada mountains is visible extending down into the milky vapors below.

Dealing with a family member who thinks it is 'insulting' to point out that her experiences in a state that allows the "Panic Defense" do not in any way make her qualified to ignore queer experiences on the subject. The straights are absolutely not ok.

If anyone was curious as to what the edge of a Great Horned Owl and Red Tailed Hawk's outermost feather looked like, this is your lucky day. The "fringes" as they are called on the owl are believed to break up the air to aid in the bird's silent flight.
The magnified edge of a Great Horned Owl P10 feather, showing the characteristic fringes. They look somewhat like hairy eyelashes. The magnified edge of a Red Tailed Hawk P10 feather, showing the lack of fringes. Unlike the owl, the hawk's feather comes to a more abrupt end.
