My job went from being a senior in a team, mostly doing quality assurance and picking up reasonable mistakes and having nice chats with people about how to avoid them, to sifting through errors made by AI and venting my frustration by screaming into the void. I’d much rather work with people again.

I constantly switch from the terror that we’re here for a reason and I’m completely failing it, and the terror that we’re here for absolutely no reason at all. Though sometimes I’m just thinking about movies, and those times are neat.

Switching from heating to air con to heating to air con multiple times in one week is bit of a head spinner.

That feeling when you come home from the shops without having remembered to buy pepper for the tenth day in a row.

Matthew Fox as Jack Sheppard Cries in Lost
Alt: Matthew Fox as Jack Sheppard Cries in Lost Lost was such a great show - unfortunately so many people either didn’t understand the ending, forgot the ending, or just plain lied about the ending that a weird amount of people are certain it was purgatory the whole time - when it explicitly was not that at all! They definitely survived the crash, this is as straightforward as canon gets. BAH! so now people believe it has the most obvious possible ending when it’s not even slightly true!

Widow’s Bay is to Parks and Recreation what The Good Place was to Lost, and I mean this as a high compliment to all four shows.

Honestly I just realised that I don’t know where the name/s America comes from and that seems surprising to me - all the Aaron Sorkin shows I’ve watched, surely it’s come up! (But I do know the derivation of Australia, which as an Australian, is probably more important)

My personality feels like 50% Andy Dwyer, 20% Jerry Gergich, 15% Leslie Knope, 8% Chris Traeger, 4% Ben Wyatt, 2% Ron Swanson, and 1% April Ludgate. With a lot of effort I hope to switch this to 50% Leslie Knope, 15% Ben Wyatt, 15% Andy Dwyer, 10% Chris Treager, and 10% Ron Swanson. Wish me luck!

People do seem to have been coming round on Speed Racer but for years my brother and I thought we were crazy - because people mocked it, when it’s not just good, it’s great!

People crapped all over The Marvels and then went on about Deadpool and Wolverine, when Marvels was a breezy, energetic, fun movie and D&W was a tired mess of references that totally missed what worked about either character.

I’m not nearly articulate enough to express just how awesome a person Dolly Parton was, so I’ll just say I’m sad and listening to my favourite of her albums.

I’d take Oliver off as a separate thing, lift Meyers up two spots, and then that’s perfect. Also, drop Corden down a deep deep hole covered in guano and mossy boulders - not on this list, in reality.

The Emmys love streaks, like they’re on autopilot. Whilst this is frustrating for the shows that never win, it also undermines some good wins. Like season two of Ted Lasso wasn’t deserving, and I think it puts people off the show a bit, which sucks because season one of Ted Lasso is genuinely great.

When the librarian showed up in The End of Oak Street my brother turned and asked ‘Gilmore Girls?’ and immediately I replied ‘oh yes, Mrs. Kim’ and in that moment I knew that my wife has been a very good influence on me.

That’s a fantastic filmography, but Cotten was in a lot of movies, watering that average down. Cazale only ever made five movies, and every one is a classic. Nobody else compares to that.

He’s not saying ‘healthy’ to mean ‘good’ he’s saying ‘healthy’ to mean ‘strong’ The point he’s making is that politics always swing left and right, which is healthy, but now we’re so partisan that we’re no longer working together, which is bad. He’s a liberal who’s called out Trump multiple times.

Skinner: Am I Out Of Touch? No, The Children Are Wrong.
Alt: Principal Skinner: Am I Out Of Touch? No, The Children Are Wrong. It’s my firm believe you can chart the quality of The Simpsons by how Skinner evolves - he starts out funny, but also rough and a little traditional, then as he grows more loose and absurd he gets funnier and funnier, until we reach the top of the curve and suddenly he stops being a rounded character and instead just different riffs on the mothers boy theme, until the joke gets so over done it’s both boring and heart breaking to watch. They took their best characters and made him a one note monotonous joke, just like what happened to the best show on tv in the 90’s.

One great value Nolan’s film has brought, there’s a lot more discussion going on about different translations in general - not just The Odyssey, but any text that has been manipulated by many hands over centuries. These things are alive, we don’t just have to read the 18th century interpretations.

Trevor @theestshuffle.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
I’m going to try and stop here, because I don’t want to come across as a desperate fanboy attacking anyone who has anything bad to say about Nolan - different opinions is what makes discussing film fun! I just don’t like it when people try and use their opinions to try and talk down to others.

Like the criticism that Inception doesn’t actually make sense- it’s absolutely fine if you don’t like Inception, it’s fine it you just didn’t click with its plotting. But it does make sense, and to say it doesn’t says more about you, and how you appreciate film, than Inception and those who love it.

The issue I have with the article is it comes from a perspective that Nolan’s success is just the result of fanboys driving a cult, leading to people embracing his films for superficial reasons, as though anyone putting any thought into them can see that they’re just gimmicky and hollow.
100
Trevor @theestshuffle.bsky.social · 25/07/2026
You can expect this to be the type of backlash that heats up as The Odyssey’s success keeps growing - it’s not a hit piece, it’s not mean or even that uncalled for, but it’s also a clear attempt to diffuse the enthusiasm towards the film by making criticism towards it sound like the voice of reason.

He’s making head trips for the masses, and so every Nolan movie automatically qualifies as his new Ultimate Trip.

Use Because a Little Bug Went Ka-Choo! as the structure for the story and this would work

It’s like LOTR films v Hobbit films - whilst LOTR did use a lot of CGI, there was a clear effort to film as much as they could on real sets, with real effects, with immense care, and those films are still beloved. The Hobbit (maybe unfairly) felt lazy, rushed and unconvincing and are now a footnote.

Absolutely! I was really taken by the films visuals and its scope - but I was finding it a little cold, until you get to the sacking of Troy and the message that comes with it, I genuinely cried during that scene and have not been able to get the movie out of my head since leaving the cinema.

I was 16 when The Replacements came out - I saw it with my cousin who was a huge Keanu fan, I was happy to go because I was a huge Hackman fan. I was very pleasantly surprised when Wardens name popped up in the credits. Not much of a film, but it was great to catch him on the big screen just once!

The Odyssey was terrific! Not perfect, the first act was slower than you might expect, and some parts of the story were a little sacrificed for the whole - but it builds and builds as it goes and the final act is fantastic and makes the whole film stronger. Definitely a great parallel to Oppenheimer

That said, Harrison Ford and Steve Martin should absolutely make a film together playing a couple of estranged brothers who have to come together to solve their 105 year old mother’s murder.

Sam Neill passing has me really sad. Not just because because Jurassic Park is one of my favourite films, or because my dad loved Death in Brunswick, or because Simpsons, or because I watched the Merlin miniseries on a great holiday… because he was just always such a cool guy, and I’m sad he’s gone

It’s my next episode too, and also my favourite - for a show famous for its dialogue, the way Mrs. Landingham flinches during the 21 gun salute manages to silently sum up everything the episode wants to say. Toby Ziegler rules!

A purely perfect film. Comparing Gene Hackman in The French Connection to Gene Hackman in The Conversation is a show of astonishing range, without need for accents or affectations, two thoroughly different yet perfectly realised characters that tap into the very core of their movies

I’m not a big horror fan, (nothing against it, just usually not for my tastes) and when I do like horror it’s more for atmosphere than gore or jump scares - so Hokum delivered very well for me.
