I may have got a bit carried away with the bookshelves.
The Library room in The Endless Museum. A towering spiral of bookshelves reaches towards the ceiling between two staircases leading to upper galleries. Smaller book towers and labelled article doorways surround it.

I put a bench in front of Jupiter in case you need a minute.
A small wooden bench faces a large model of Jupiter in a brass ring at the centre of a bright museum gallery. Framed exhibits and doorways labelled with related Wikipedia articles line the walls.

I was trying to get to Ancient Rome. Somehow I'm in a cheese gallery.

Making Wikipedia into a building has involved a surprising amount of worrying about where to put the doors.
A tall open doorway in the Mathematics gallery reveals a large exhibit hall beyond. Smaller arched doors on either side are labelled Number theory and Adelard of Bath.

I've put a door to the tropics in the snow room. Seems only fair.
Snow falls across an outdoor museum landscape with pine trees and mountains. Freestanding article doors surround the exhibits; a door labelled Tropics stands on the right.

You can play Pong in here. This is not helping me finish making the game.
A playable Pong cabinet in a bright museum gallery. Its screen shows two paddles, a 0–0 score and an E — Play prompt. Photographs of Pong machines and doors to related articles surround it.

I know I made it but I still don't think a door marked Mouthfeel should exist.
A two-storey museum hall for Cheese, with patterned walls, paintings of cheese and a large gramophone. Doors around the upper balcony are labelled Dairy product, Milk, Mouthfeel and Fat.

I assumed the maps were broken. They were fine, they just needed placing before the doors.

The Endless Museum @theendlessmuseum.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
Things get placed along the walls in a fixed order, and each one reserves its stretch. For quite a while every wall map ended up on a table instead, because the doors were placed first and used up all the wall.
The France room, a large hall lit from above with a map of France on the wall to the left, a raised terrace with brass letters in the floor, and doors labelled Geography and Flag of France.

I initially skipped the depth reset, and the leftover depth from the current room chopped holes in the next one. Took a while to work that out.

The Endless Museum @theendlessmuseum.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Drawing the next room through a doorway took three passes. Mark the doorway pixels in the stencil buffer, reset the depth inside that mark, then draw the room beyond restricted to the mark.

The article about Easter eggs has an Easter egg in it. It's under glass. Press E.

The downside is that if I change the order of the random calls, thousands of rooms quietly rearrange themselves.
000
The Endless Museum @theendlessmuseum.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Every room is generated from a random number generator seeded with the article title, so the Cheese room looks the same for everyone. It's very useful when something goes wrong, as I can go back and get the same layout.
A tall galleried hall in the Cheese room with a central column, a gramophone on a stand, paintings on easels and doors labelled Dairy product and Fat on the upper tier.

The Recursion room has a door marked Recursion. It goes to the Recursion room.

Glad it's useful. It takes that room's colour. The fill lights are a fixed pool that get parked inside whichever rooms are visible, and each one picks up its room's tint, time-of-day script and even live weather. So a storm room reads grey through the door of a golden one.

nice write up. The "make it feel good before gameplay" order is underrated, people bounce off ugly prototypes before they find the fun. Board looks lovely already.

felt this. I've spent more hours on fog density and key light falloff than on anything the player would call a feature. Fog debugging at 1am is the true jump scare.

no corridor carving at all is wild, the halls read as authored. I do rooms from a seeded planner and still fight the "every room feels the same" thing, so this is very relevant to my interests.

the unusual articles list is basically a wing of its own. I built a walkable museum out of Wikipedia and that list is where most people's first wander ends up.

this is a great idea. I've been building a Wikipedia museum too (theendlessmuseum.com) and overhearing actual people muttering in the exhibits is the bit I never thought of. Would love to see Throng loose in it.

Danke! Genuinely made my day seeing this. If anyone finds a room that looks broken or just weird, tell me, I collect them.

Cheating, mostly! Lights never cross - the shadowed key light only exists for the room you're in, neighbours just get a flat fill that fades up as you get close. And nothing ever stands half in a doorway. The door is a short tunnel drawn once, and only the player walks through it.

The Endless Museum @theendlessmuseum.bsky.social · 16/09/2026
Each neighbouring room is only drawn through its own doorway, using the stencil buffer, so you can see through without the two interiors drawing over each other. I wrote it up in more detail here: edwardbonnett.com

Something people ask about quite a lot: the rooms in the museum actually overlap each other. There's no sensible way to fit every Wikipedia article into one building, so I stopped trying.
Looking through an open archway in the Botany room into a darker gallery beyond, with a painting lit at its far end. Doors labelled Myristica fragrans and Nutmeg stand either side.
