ha, i used a review of said book to work through my ethical, spiritual and emotional divorce of morrissey, also how music crit mentality had sabotaged my counselling training but that's a whole other thing.

Yes! The triumphant return of Mondeo Pop for the post Cowell age! When Olivia Dean enters, the song feels like such a moment that it's not hard to see why it was number one forever. I guess they're more equal but it kinda feels like on X Factor when the super special guest joins the finalist.

you are thou the anthony bourdain of listening to pop music. where he savoured the taste of cheap street food and beer locals love in the most remote and unlikely of locations, you've put your headphones on and discovered the rich flavours that sent joe dolce and 14 flavours of Westlife to the top

similar with geography, suede are still nearly always billed in the uk as "the band that kickstarted britpop" whilst 90% of their insta comments are from south american fans who just want the cool Trash band to play somewhere near them again this decade

yes! there's a great episode of @albumtoalbum.bsky.social where Charlotte Hatherley talks about her love of Tin Machine I which she enjoyed as an 80s hard rock album alongside Guns n Roses and such like.

possibly belong in separate thou overlapping category of FAILED MESSIAHS, acts who've done well enough but are resented for not achieving what commentators initially suggested they would.

possibly the full decade oasis spent filling uk stadiums, having no.1s and constantly being asked to apologise for be here now, not being bigger in america and the failure of tony blair to deliver social democracy

they were kinda big in the uk, like the pixies before them they were a britpop band (in the widest possible sense) who happened to come from america. anyway here's some zoomer (probably) fan art: www.instagram.com/reel/DcrybGM...

Peter Jackson made a streaming blockbuster out of The Beatles generally having a bad time making an album, though I guess they're having a pretty good time by the end.

There's something kinda Beano about the Sex Pistols that doesn't translate to the heroic rock myth that connects Pink Floyd to The Clash. Anyway, "I've met the Queen and she's a very nice lady" youtu.be/vWnCV91abkM?...

I think there was a fake 00s as well. The No Logo, Kid A, anti-globalisation era which got wiped off the board by big things from New York (9/11, The Strokes, electroclash)

Suede are often seen as the first Britpop - real 90s - band but their mk1 incarnation has more in common with Shakespears Sister than with what came next. They also had a line into the Derek Jarman queer art scene which feels like the antithesis of where things ended up.

Think that layer upon layer of detail were very much a key part of Bowie's working post Tin Machine. Chris has probably written about it, IIRC there was a great discussion on @albumtoalbum.bsky.social with @leahkardos.bsky.social about the sheer layers of stuff Bowie layered into The Next Day.

This really sounds like Art / Be My God, the two "baggy" Suede songs the band had deleted before The Drowners came out. Niche.

It feels like that whole strata of Pitchfork music started middle aged. The National and War on Drugs were making mature comeback albums without a come to be back from.

He secretly did it with the Buddha of Surbubia soundtrack, which is an almost ambient autobiography, and more loudly made a "big important statement" about race with Black Tie White Noise feat Al B. Sure!

PJ Harvey's Let England Shake I think really fit the bill here, and all those later era Nick Cave albums that sort of blur into one.

On second viewing I've found it a lot less egregious as I did on first watch. The run of episodes are a bit like that other cultural landmark of 1991 Tin Machine II - an auteur feeling the backlash of giving too much creative control to poorly chosen collaborators.
