How do cognitive skills develop after childhood, and can wages proxy adult skills? Linking childhood skills to wages and skills at 50, the paper finds education predicts both later skills and wages, while occupation and time out of work predict wages only.

This short paper studies rank-order competition between a principal, who chooses a project, and an agent, who chooses whether to help. Competition can incentivize the agent to cooperate rather than sabotage. The principal can exploit these incentives when designing the project.

In 2005-9 eight big tech firms (incl. Apple, Google, Intel, eBay) secretly agreed not to compete for each other's workers. This “no poaching” scheme reduced salaries by about 5.6%. In total workers lost at least $3.1bn, while the tech firms settled litigation for just $435mn.

The 1998 Pelé Act banned noncompetes in Brazilian football. Wages fell for young players and rose for older ones. Using a structural model, we estimate small efficiency gains and substantial distributional effects.

This paper introduces an open-source toolbox that empowers economists to build their own climate emulators for macro-climate analysis. It enables the design of custom carbon-cycle sinks, e.g., to study deforestation or to downscale global warming into regional damages.

Accounting for demographic transitions yields a carbon tax up to 57% higher than in a representative-agent economy with no demographic change, yet lower than simply scaling by trend population growth. Temperatures rise in all fertility scenarios when demographics are included.

This paper integrates demographic change into climate-economy models. It shows that population aging and slower growth raise the social discount rate, while population scale amplifies emissions. As a result, the social cost of carbon can be up to 57% higher than when demographics are ignored.

What do cities offer that remote work can't? 🏙️ @ruben-gaetani.bsky.social finds that while remote collaboration can support routine innovation, the most novel ideas still depend on the informal, face-to-face interactions that cities make possible. More: bit.ly/4vWcsn9 @theeconjournal.bsky.social

Are cities losing their innovation advantages in a remote-work world?
New evidence from the pandemic period suggests that while remote collaboration can sustain routine innovation, it weakens the face-to-face encounters that generate the most novel ideas.
