Ella Fitzgerald has been a major inspiration to me since I was a little girl. So, when I decided to write a novel, I knew that I had to write about her. But as I researched her life, I uncovered someone who was both unrecognizable and someone I could relate to in surprising ways.

One of my favorite stories to tell from my time in the music industry is when I worked at Dick Scott Entertainment, who managed Mark Wahlberg, a young rapper in the early 1990s known as Marky Mark, and had to call Dick while he was on a plane to let him know that Marks house had been broken into.

In the early 1980s, I was given an incredible opportunity to be a backup singer for Whitney Houston. I remember being amazed by her talent and confidence and shocked that someone like me, also a new artist, would be able to sing with her in the music video for “You Give Good Love.”
