A bit involved with Internet policy stuff. And the name is a pub not a job.

Nothing adds up. The Ministry of Justice has the highest headcount in the civil service, which Conservative policy suggests they’ll cut by 29 (ish) %. Self-managing prisons? Prisoners policing themselves? Could someone, like a journalist, do some maths please.

And, shouldn’t this be means tested so it doesn’t apply to wealthier parents? :-)

The definition of about “rogue” we’re accepting? Hugging Face, etc., rogue in the sense of a screw-up (we didn’t watch the sandbox, oops). But digging through places they promised never to dig? That’s Facebook’s ever expanding social graph of 20 years ago. Information = money, therefore fibs. Rogue?

Why discuss a policy that’s not going to happen? Go back to the original article. A source said something was discussed. An agenda item as treasury officials/SPADs ran through current policy, “shall we drop it by £500k? No, too much pain”. On to next item. But the story runs like it’s truth.

Hacking? Or just the agent’s “mission” to access and learn from every bit of information connected to the Internet? I remember Facebook’s ever expanding social graph about 20 years ago. Then we were the commodity, now it’s everything.

Looks character you’d see drawn on the cover of a Terry Pratchett book about “shale magnates”.

A dumb question, what does "bunching" mean, practically? I sell my property for <£2 million? To save £2,500? Or who am I saving this £2,500 for?

“I have known Helen for many, many year[s]. She is a determined campaigner and I think she is going to do a very, very good job,” said Farage. Unlike the last two leaders of Reform UK in Wales who Farage never met, were not friends, never had a drink with. OK, onwards.

Balls. Telegraph was never The or A newspaper of record. Was a place for obituaries, very good reporting on rugby and cricket, crosswords for people (me) who struggled with The Times, and Guardian’s cryptic (pure evil). Now it’s batshit, the sport reporting much diminished. ChatGPT solves puzzles.

You have been very gentle…. Nice F. But skin tone. For MPs who work so hard they all have quite luxurious tans. Why is Jenrick chasing a biscuit?

Such a massive country, what would be the effect of closing the main Moscow airports and Saint Petersburg? It seems doable, planes parked at gates and remote will burn. But what increased retaliation would it bring?

She proposes specific cuts to policies for specific things: VAT on motabilty provided cars (a smug bit of schadenfreude; VAT on private school fees, our sick response) to fund a %, but what will £1.1 billion buy for the MoD? It’s performative. Wheelchair users, take your cars to Tory conference.

Any news about policies? Perhaps defence, health, social care, education (Suella doesn’t really count), transport, various other pesky departments, possibly with a spokesperson. Nice if someone would ask Nigel. He’d probably think it rude, but worth a try.

The point of Netflix, once, was the longtail. Algorithms that pointed you to stuff you wouldn’t otherwise know about, and pay for. The future of commerce said Sand Hill Road. Spotify, perhaps, still does it a bit.

Tokyo, Ginza district, food and shops
Tokyo. I lived close to Ginza for 20+ years. This is a guide, of sorts, mostly the Ginza district, food and shops I/we like. I'm not a good guide for cultural things, but this discussion about Shin...

Japan not really comparable, local and regional train lines serving the big cities run by retail companies and their construction affiliates. But the concept attractive.

No. He loses, he’s done. He loses, the Greens also pretty much done.

Adam Peake @thedev.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Without this, Starmer would haunt Burnham for the parliament - it’s freeing. And the Greens, after a conference of bonkers resolutions in early October, will be screwed in a by-election 4/6 weeks later. Polanski can’t run. He loses, good chance, his political career’s done and his party’s also.
010
Adam Peake @thedev.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Crace is a divot. Starmer stepping down frees Burnham - he can do as he did in the Commons and praise his international achievements. Later, he’ll be able to criticise where Starmer screwed up (often) and he was the fix. Also frees Starmer, a last week of crap from media and he gets on with life.

He seems to dislike Westminster. Not the same. Last week didn’t he announce a large bung for London? 30%+ of council house funding.

Adam Peake @thedev.bsky.social · 01/09/2026
Burnham can now pick and chose how to blame and praise Starmer. As Yvette Cooper kind of did in her interview with Osborne; in 2022 she didn’t see Labour as having a chance, to him being a crap (not quite that direct) PM and leader.
