After their professor had disappeared, numerous search parties were sent to the area. Every single one returned without the slightest hint of whether they were dead or alive. It was as though they'd vanished with the clouds of dust rising from the collapsing cathedral. The uncertainty chafed at him, pushing him to try and find out for himself.

Their return would be a great boon to the Empire, no doubt. And why couldn't they return? They'd done it before. Impossible often looked the other way where the professor was involved.

That was what he told himself as he made his way out of the monastery proper and into the ravine below the bridge. And maybe. if he brought the professor back, lady Edelgard might have to take him seriously, Ferdinand shooed away the thought, a little ashamed it occurred to him at all.

Ferdinand's eyes fluttered closed as he turned his face to the sun, letting the breeze ruffle his hair. He would've liked to have Hubert's rejection in writing, too, to reread whenever his resolve to keep his distance faltered.

A pompous, arrogant whelp, who flaunted his family name as though he'd done something to earn it. Too blinded by the glow of his own self-importance to see-

He shook his head, a melancholy smile on his lips. One day he might be able to think back to Hubert's rejection without wincing, but it wouldn't be today.

Wednesday
Dealing with the corrupt nobility right at the outset of the war was supposed to free their hands to focus on the fighting. 'Supposed to' being the key term. Another night found Hubert burning the candle on ends that hadn't even been invented yet.

The letter folded by his empty coffee cup taunted him. A brief report and a few stilted sentences, the epistolary equivalent of small talk with one's elderly aunt, twice-removed. Not that Hubert would know - his aunt was removed only once, but she was removed very effectively, long before he was born.

So that was the 'happy indifference' Ferdinand proposed.

This only took me half of forever. Well, I think that once they grow closer, Ferdinand will be quite sympathetic. In the Academy, he'll probably feel the sudden urge to take up the trumpet.
Manuela held back her I told you so-s, but only because the young general was in no shape to process them. While one of the orderlies took away the bucket Hubert had been clinging to minutes earlier, Manuela drew the privacy curtain around the bed closed, pulled up a chair, and took Hubert's hand, sending in pulses of weak healing magic. The hand in her own was cold and clammy. Manuela ran her thumb over the swollen joints, watching for any signs of another attack.

The door to the infirmary flew open. She got up, lips pursed. Whoever thought it wise to disturb when she was seeing to a patient would get a piece of her mind.

Or not.

"Edelgard?" Her eyes widened. "Ferdinand? What are you two doing here?"

Those words were mainly aimed at Her Majesty, considering that Ferdinand didn't look like he knew either. He had to come straight from the training grounds - he was uncharacteristically dishevelled, a towel slung around his shoulders.

"Hubert collapsed, hasn't he?" Edelgard's face was unreadable, a lake frozen over. "I was told healing from someone whose magic he's already accustomed to is more efficient."

Manuela raised an eyebrow. Ferdinand averted his eyes, tell-tale pink tinting his ears. "Well- when there was a smaller scrape or headache, I would assist... naturally!"

She rested her hands on her hips and tossed her head in the direction of the curtain. "All yours." She shot Edelgard a smile. "I'll keep an eye on him, of course. The only thing that should worry you is how hellbent Hubert seems to be on his self-destruction."

Edelgard pinched the bridge of her nose. "Trust me, I know."Atop the blanket, Hubert's fingers twitched. The smell of vinegar and herbs hit his nose before he fully regained consciousness. The infirmary, then. He nuzzled the pillow, only to find that the pillow was, in fact, not a pillow. He sat up and then winced, the movement too abrupt for his pounding head.

"Fear not, it is only me," came a voice from what he mistook to be a pillow. Ferdinand sat up and wrapped a steadying arm around his waist. Only him. Only? As if such a thing were possible.

Hubert suddenly grew all too aware of the unpleasant taste lingering in his mouth, the sweat-slick hair sticking to his face and he harboured no illusions about the state of his complexion either.

"Manuela said you can be moved into your own bed once you wake up," Ferdinand continued, rubbing Hubert's back. Calloused hand left trails of tingling faith magic in its wake, warm and familiar like the first cup of coffee on a chilly morning. "Do you feel up to it? I could carry you, if you would prefer."

All he wanted was to crawl under the covers and stay there until he devised a reliable memory-altering spell. Looking for his gloves, looking for his tome, looking anywhere but at him, Hubert grumbled: "I suppose you've proposed worse plans."

Dorothea took the letter from his unresisting fingers and gave it a quick read. "This is very brief. Are you sure Ferdie sent it?" Before Hubert could say anything, Dorothea set it down, and continued: "When you write back, tell him I said hi- no, wait, this is Ferdie we're talking about. Send him my regards. Oh, and tell him that Petra-"

"I have no intention of writing back," he interrupted her, though not unkindly. "This is simply a report, not… personal correspondence."

"Hubie, you don't mean to tell me you never respond, right?"

-Burying Bones are all named, which is not a standard for me. "206" is self-explanatory, but other than that the names are mostly music references, including the title of the fic itself (Bones, specifically Jaida Dreyer's version):
There's something waiting, it can't be found
Tied to the chains of what's going in the ground
Right now I'm strong but I'm not naive
One day this could be, be the death of me

Every now and then you let what you love go
And wicked things you carry swallow you up whole
We'll bless these bleeding hands and what will rest below
I'm burying bones, burying bones

“I have to admit,” he said after a while, “this performance proves beyond a shadow of doubt that Mittelfrank understood Her Majesty’s vision and took it several steps further.”

Ferdinand hummed, a rising, questioning sound.

“See, Her Majesty’s idea only assumes people could acquire the roles they were suited for, regardless of birth, but I see that whoever was in charge of casting here decided to offer opportunities regardless of talent.”

He could feel rather than see how Ferdinand’s shoulders shook with stifled laughter. “Be nice.”

"I need quiet to work," Linhardt grumbled, trying to clean the area around the damaged skin so that he could Heal it more effectively, all the while turning a more concerning shade of green by the minute. Was that sage or olive?

"We both know that's not true," Hubert shot back, though there was no real bite to it.

"Fine, I need you to be quiet to work."

The stifled sound that escaped Ferdinand sounded suspiciously close to laughter, but it turned into a pained hiss almost immediately.

There are too many options, even if I only stuck to English. Invictus by Henley is dear to me, Robert Browning's The Laboratory is an old favourite, too... The Drunken Boat by Arthur Rimbaud (different translation though) is also up there... I do enjoy poetry, though I'm a bit basic with it.
Favourite poems? Any language.Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul. That in the mortar—you call it a gum?
Ah, the brave tree whence such gold oozings come!
And yonder soft phial, the exquisite blue,
Sure to taste sweetly,—is that poison too? But, in truth, I have wept too much! Dawns are heartbreaking.
Every moon is atrocious and every sun bitter.
Acrid love has swollen me with intoxicating torpor
O let my keel burst! O let me go into the sea!

more progress on Ferdinand's Letter
"Well…" Ferdinand began, struggling to find words. The sun had already set, and his aunt would have much to say about his tardiness. She had a lot to say about many things in general, though her monologues were largely unburdened by facts.

The same could be said of the most of the extended family. They couldn't comprehend why duke Aegir was arrested, and so they simply elected to ignore it. Once the initial shock subsided, they even treated the war, "that unpleasant affair", as a mere interlude that would pass soon, Ferdinand's own involvement as a young man's folly.

Why should they care? Enbarr was safe.

He cleared his throat. "That was most enlightening, Hubert. Thank you for showing me, though I cannot for the life of me understand why you did."

fashionably late for WIP Wednesday with Ferdinand's Letter
"Hubert! Were you looking for me? What happened?"

The other waved his hand dismissively, like a man whose past hour wasn't filled with constant glances out of the window. "Must there be a reason?"

"Yes, there must." Ferdinand crossed his arms. "Have you forgotten? It is best we do not touch on topics other than work and weather."

Hubert scoffed. "As you wish. I thought you might be interested in- ah, never mind. The weather is tolerable. Goodnight."

It was bait. Even Ferdinand could tell that it was bait. Lichen growing on the underside of a rock could tell that it was bait. He shifted his weight and blurted out: "Interested in what?"

So be it. Anyone would be curious. Hubert could shove that victorious smirk where… wherever he kept his other poisons.

picked up Ferdinand's Letter again... what's going on with Hubert??? + a little Antagonist sneak peek
Dorothea slipped out of Hubert's office and finally breathed that sigh of relief she'd been holding since handing over the coded missives from Hrym. Only one, and then she was smiling again, as a diva should.

"Dorothea! I thought you were on tour!"

Ferdinand's voice carried, but he didn't come closer, as though there was an invisible barrier around Hubert's office. Dorothea wouldn't be surprised if that were the case. Back in the Academy, those two got along like sopranos and mezzos, or sopranos and contraltos, or sopranos and other sopranos - any improvement on that front would be a miracle.

She crossed her arms. "The opera company had to return to the capital at some point, you know."

"Ah-" He flushed. "Of course. Of course! What I meant is that I did not expect to see you today. It has been too long."

[…]

"You may escort me to the opera," she offered. "Or are you too busy?"

The door to Hubert's office opened a crack, barely perceptible. Hubert didn't join them and if Ferdinand noticed, he gave no sign of it. The guards posted in front of the palace had enough good sense to pretend they weren't eavesdropping when their Emperor addressed the minister of the imperial household.

"Are you sure you don't want to join me?"

Hubert nodded, his expression unreadable behind the curtain of dark hair. "It is for the best, given the situation."

She watched him for a moment. "Nobody believes you would harm Ferdinand."

"Why not?" He wouldn't meet her eyes. "A motive could be invented easily enough, I imagine. Best I maintain some distance until the situation is resolved."

They never made a habit of vulnerability - it would be too awkward to start now. Worse yet, he had a point.

Without another word, Edelgard disappeared in the infirmary. Compared to the one in Garreg Mach, it was smaller, but equipped with anything a doctor could wish for and furnished not just for efficiency, but for comfort. She didn't need it often. Not yet.

It was an accident, Hubert didn't say. Because they both knew that. Because it would change nothing. Because no words fit around the twist in his heart. Because, frankly, his brain was not in charge at the moment. Instead, he loosened his grip on Ferdinand's hair to stroke his cheek. "Consider me contrite."

Hubert was staring at his hands. He flexed his fingers and, with a slow exhale, relaxed them again. The memory of Ferdinand thrashing about in his grip was only that, a memory. They rarely touched, contrary to some of the gossip circulating around the capital. Those who repeated that drivel clearly thought Hubert a far braver man than he truly was.

"Hubie! Is anyone going to tell me what's going on?"
