A 2014 study by Dr. Benjamin Herman identified cardiovascular disease as the leading
cause of premature mortality among professional wrestlers, accounting for approximately
38% of examined deaths. More than a decade later, an extensive 2026 WWE cohort study
co-authored by Dr. Reidar Lystad found cardiovascular and circulatory disease accounted
for approximately 41% of wrestler deaths.
While the studies used different methodologies and cohorts, the later findings remained
directionally consistent with the mortality patterns reflected within the present dataset.
Elite athletes are generally expected to outlive the general population by approximately
four to seven years due to lower rates of cardiovascular disease and cancer. However,
research comparing NFL players to MLB players found significantly elevated rates of
cardiovascular and neurodegenerative mortality among NFL athletes participating in a
collision sport.
As a former collision sport performer, I know there are many factors that can contribute
to severe physical strain—drug and alcohol use, constant travel, lack of sleep, chronic
stress, injury, and the pressure to perform through all of it. The cardiovascular findings
were the first thing that deeply alarmed me because they suggest a recurring pattern
involving multiple contributing factors.

This is true but incomplete. Unions may not want boycotts because they are fighting the boss over revenue. Also boycotts work counter to strikes which are about creating unmet demand. Boycotts have their place but there is reason unions rarely call for them at all and there may be no strategic time

The reason why unions often say not to boycott something is because they're saving that strategic action until it can make the most impact.

Nice essay. Got me thinking about the central conceit of AEW and WWE and I wrote some notes app thoughts on how it impacts the role of the camera on the shows.

fiction. They will just have people talking
backstage and in the fiction it is implied there is
no camera there. It is blocked ike a drama. You
don't need to explain why the camera is there
because vou wouldn't in a movie either. think

I learned from this article that the original plan in #AEW was for Sting to do all his matches as pre-tapes and Darby convinced him to work live. Thank goodness we got that legendary last run the way it was meant to happen. www.espn.com/professional...

Initially, the plan was for Allin and Sting
to be involved in cinematic matches.
pretaped to allow for cuts, retakes and
visual effects to mask any of Sting's
shortcomings due to age and injury. Sting
wasn't sure how many matches he would
have but agreed to give it a shot. Allin
flew to Sting's house in Texas to train, and
once there, he realized that the Hall of
Famer still had more to give as a pro
wrestler.

With Allin's urging, Sting agreed to
wrestle his matches live. in front of
audiences. And for the next three vears
the duo went undefeated in matches.
with Sting retiring as an AEW tag team
champion with Allin. From going through
tables to diving off stages and balconies.
