Big fan of the sassy sheep and the exploding demon worm from this Cusco school painting. A lot going on here, but they’re clearly the stars (Unknown, “Divina Pastora” Phoenix Art Museum)

Every book lover knows the ONE time you don’t to pack a book for a trip is the one time you have time to read it! Maybe it’s a good thing because I have a new book for my 3 hour flight later this week. Will report back what I learn about animal welfare

Recovering Heritage with THREAD! 🪡 El Museo Regional de Historia de Colima recently shared these pics from a new project that invites local embroiders to ‘rekindle’ Pre-Hispanic iconography in thread. Such a cool concept!! Read more: shorturl.at/DzWtE

Hope my brother appreciates the amount of timelines I had to interrupt in order to include our Chihuahua in some of history’s greatest artworks for his Xmas present

Thinking today about the eyelashes on this sleeping Teotihuacan dog at the St. Louis Art Museum Fabulous. Flourishing. Unbothered. An icon!

Meanwhile on the other place: a ‘cultural researcher’ is arguing that people never cared about pets (ex: who cares if you shoot a dog!) before boomers OPEN UP THE SCHOOLS

"Turkey Effigy Ocarina" Unknown Artist 300 BC-AD 200 Colima, Mexico Walters Art Museum A masterly crafted depiction of America's favorite Thanksgiving bird ft. a very curious little dog. The view from atop those feathers must be nice- where might this iconic duo be going? 🦃🐕

When the Salted Caramel Kahlúa cake is so good, you gotta bring out the entire squad 💯 Wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving!

The fact that I can’t find any account of someone who tried Hot Kahlúa Cheese Dip tells me there were no survivors Definitely had to be the processed cheese + alcohol + banana combo that did them in

relatedly, if you’re looking to avoid ever being asked to host Thanksgiving again, do I have a great idea for you: HOT CHEESE KAHLUA DIP
Snippet of ad with “fondueing it- Kahlua style” and a recipe for cheese Kahlua fondue and a much more normal chocolate one, surmounted by an array of putatively ancient statuettes

This Chihuahua ‘book’ was all the rage for 10yo me! Shout out to the wonky history here for inspiring me to write a thesis- I’m still looking for those ‘ancient paintings’ of chihuahuas to pop up one day 🤔 I bought it at a Bob Evans of all places too!

"Bottle" Unknown Artist 300 BCE-300 CE Jalisco, Mexico Lowe Art Museum, University of Miami I feel like this dog would be a pro at the game of Twister if not for his stubby little legs! Unlike Colima dogs, he has a simple face, but is just as lovable 🫶 emuseum.as.miami.edu/objects/13753/…

Amazing! I hope this work travels far and wide! It really captures a scene of splendor that I think a lot of folks (especially students) have trouble imagining accurately. I wish every intro class could see this!

Thank you! That's what I was thinking, but I'm not super familiar with either area. Didn't know if there was a secret Flamingo Parade Cult I was missing out on! 🦩

An #Archaeology flamingo thread in 16 skeets One day, I saw this Egyptian pot 🏺 from 5000+ years ago (now @metmuseum.bsky.social ). Maybe it represents the famous Dance of the Flamingos? Wanting to see if that hunch was true, I dug in. The research-hole didn’t take me where I thought it would… /1
a simple ceramic jar with a light red on tan decoration. In the center is a row of birds drawn in a simple, stylized fashion. They have long legs and a long neck ending in a curly-q shaped head. The color and shape gives them a strong resemblance to a line of flamingos doing their famous dance shown frequently in nature documentaries often voiced by David Attenborough

Ooo I have a question @flintdibble.bsky.social!! 🙋 I recently went to the St. Louis Art Museum and saw these parades of birds on a Greek vase. Is there any relation to the Naqada? Or was bird really just the word back then? Would love to know your thoughts! www.slam.org/collection/o...

A great case! I think sometimes people assume cultural heritage is something that must be ancient and dusty, but nope- a 275 year old cannon counts too!

I think the Morley diaries are available online now, but I still have pics of some of the originals! Lots of fun stuff in them Steven Shapin's "The Invisible Technician" was also a helpful piece that helped me frame the laborers throughout the capstone. Highly recommend!

Omg Uaxactun is the site I researched! I read through the Morley diaries at the APS and found that it was actually a muleteer named Alfonso who discovered Stela 9. Morley was obsessed with crediting himself as finding it. He also bribed another worker to stay and help lift it. Here's the discovery:

Is there a specific site/time period of labor you’re studying? It’s such an important topic imo! I wrote my undergrad capstone on Sylvanus Morley’s diaries and use of chicleros to find sites. It was super eye-opening to me about the power dynamics of archaeology + who is given credit for labor

"Statuette in the shape of a dog" Unknown Artist 300 BCE Colima, Mexico Museum aan de Stroom The look of a dog who just realized his owner is home (with treats!). He may be missing part of his front toe, but that notch in his ear? Probably something intentional from the artist!
