90% of churches being queerphobic eliminates a lot of options for me. it is cool that there are some that aren't

i always thought hell seemed to be an evil idea, i was dismayed by it for a time. but i can't say I'm certain that this world isn't ruled by an evil god. so it's maybe weird that I've never really felt worried about it

been think about the way ive been interested in religion but i've never felt threatened by hell. i guess it's because i always thought the idea of being punished for just disbelief was absurd/stupid?

i dont understand what scripture is tbh. i don't think scripture can be evil and have only negative teaching value. a regular historical text could be that. It's not like joshua comes with a disclaimer that says 'everything this book says about God is wrong'

Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 04/10/2026
why does it matter whether or not this or that proves that it wasn't historical? even if it didn't historically happen depicting God commanding genocide and holding that as scripture is horrible for a lot of reasons like genesis didn't happen historically but we still interpret it

thank you for answering me. it doesn't satisfy me but i think i can cope with knowing that most people who believe in the bible don't believe in the evil parts in a "literal" sense at least. they agree with me that the literal meaning is wrong about god

how do you deal with the book of joshua as a priest? like you don't believe God commands genocide in order to take land right? and if you don't how do you see it as scripture, why is it in your canon?

i just finished season 1. i loved so many of the epic moments and the characters were good, they had interesting motivations and developments. I'm interested in the world and powers too. I'm interested in how it continues, i want them to improve in season 2

to me the only thing that can be done is to reject these as things as scripture and to explicitly say they're wrong about god(s)

i should read republic soon. i've heard that some greeks criticized the poets for the myths. i want to learn more about how pagans deal with this problem. i have a feeling i won't find their solutions that compelling

i just think christians have it worse in this line of argument considering they're about equal in being bad in myths and ancient times and in modern day they just lose because republican and the catholic church exist
130
Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 29/09/2026
christians attacking pagans for morally bad myths is so dumb considering the old testament lmao

yeah the sense where i can have more impact with my vote there is definitely true

Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
thank for your replies. i think even with context it seems the authors just believed in a xenophobic view of foreign people and religions corrupting the land and people, so it can't quite be saved in the same way basically every internal justification it gives I find gross
000
Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
that's pretty interesting
000
Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
yeah what I mean by truth is slightly deeper? like moral or theological truth, Genesis can be "true" if it tells a good myth. but the book of joshua is not true because it tells says God supports genocide, at least in the "literal" reading (i don't care about if it didn't happen historically)
110
Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
basically what you're implicitly saying when you reject (bible) literalism is that the literal reading is wrong right

yeah definitely politicians are influenced by polls also with the original post I was thinking it would be funny if some normal person was influenced by non-political polls like that yougov does lol
000
Sara 🐝 @thecoalbaker.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
like people talk about polling as manipulating elections or depressing turnout. the idea that seeing your side losing in the poll might make you not go vote. i think i saw this said about one of the dem primarys recently

i need to revisit my rule of life i have one from years ago, obviously i didn't stick with its disciplines, but i'm feeling the desire to be more conscious about it this time, particularly with a view to the ever-neglected within Christianity question "Why do I perform religious practices?"

Same charts as b efore, only this time the Longenecker/Hess chart has numbers. Whee!
A bar chart itemising Paul Foster’s informal survey of the ‘votes’ for actual Pauline authorship of the various epistles, showing near unanimity that Paul wrote Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon, with mixed results on Ephesians, Colossians, 2 Thessalonians, and the Pastoral Epistles.A bar chart based on research from Bruce Longenecker and Zen Hess itemising the *percentage* of ‘votes’ for actual Pauline authorship, or Pauline participation in the composition of, or pseudonymity of the various epistles, showing near unanimity that Paul wrote Romans, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Galatians, Philippians, 1 Thessalonians, and Philemon, with mixed results on Ephesians, Colossians, 2 Thessalonians, and the Pastoral Epistles.
