Between Mountains and Water: Reflections on AAS 2026 in Vancouver
Xiaowen Zhou, McMaster University | April 30, 2026 It has been half-jokingly said that academic conferences are occasions where scholars gather in the most beautiful places in the world to look at slides for several days. If that is the case, then the 2026 annual meeting of the Association for Asian Studies in Vancouver seemed to both confirm and complicate that observation.

Reflection on the CSSSW Conference: Buddhist Studies, Spirituality, Social Work and Cross-Disciplinary Dialogue
Lan Li (Department of Historical Studies, University of Toronto-Mississauga) Ⅰ. Origin: A Call from the CSSSW Conference I was encouraged to write a short reflection on my experience at a summer conference on spirituality and social work—a conference unlike any academic event I had attended. The 12th International Spirituality Conference at the University of Calgary, “Evolving and flourishing in an age of disruption: The role of spirituality in realignment and transformation,” invited participants to reflect on the role of spirituality in an era of rapid changes and challenges (See CSSSW poster).
