Our latest analysis shows that energy losses could be halved by 2050 in a Net Zero system. Why? Because low-carbon technologies like EVs and heat pumps are more efficient, meaning they require less energy to meet the same level of demand. ⚡ Read here: www.theccc.org.uk/publication/...

Our CEO Emma Pinchbeck spoke to The Telegraph this weekend about the current energy crisis⚡ We need to spend a lot more time thinking about demand. That is the more straightforward way to help make the UK resilient to future price shocks.

Around 65-90% of the required investment will be paid by the private sector. But we will need targeted public investment too. It’s important that policymakers ensure this money goes in the right place - to unlock private investment.

This will require initial investment, but we expect to start seeing savings in the Seventh Carbon Budget period. We think it’ll cost about 0.2% of GDP from now to 2050. This is less than we thought when we last gave advice in 2020.

The UK must significantly increase the use of these technologies. By 2030, we need to see: - New electric car sales need to go from 16.5% -> to nearly 100% - Heat pump installations need to go from 1% to 10% - Increases in offshore wind x3⃣, onshore wind x2⃣, solar x5⃣
110
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 18/07/2024
In the last year, UK emissions fell by 4% overall. We are starting to see glimpses of a low-carbon transition, but this will need to ramp up alongside renewables, heat pumps and EVs becoming the norm.
100
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 18/07/2024
Across all sectors the pace of action needs to increase. We highlight transport, buildings and industry as key sectors which must see sustained emissions reductions. It is a story of progress that must go beyond electricity.
110
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 18/07/2024
Put together, the picture of progress and plans to meet the 2030 target is not good. We consider only a third of plans to meet this target credible. Almost half of the required emissions reductions carry significant risk or insufficient plans.

Stronger action is needed across the economy. The only sectors in which emissions reduced in 2021 were electricity supply and industry. Buildings and transport require rapid emissions reductions. Moving towards delivery requires action to increase significantly. (4/5)
100
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 20/03/2024
Ambitious targets are welcome, but now is the time to deliver and meet the 2030 target as soon as possible. Risks remain in all areas with significant policy powers devolved to the Scottish Government (transport, buildings, agriculture, land use and waste). (3/5)
100
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 20/03/2024
Annual emissions targets continue to be missed and Scotland’s draft Climate Change Plan has been delayed. Most key indicators of delivery progress such as tree planting, peatland restoration rates and heat pump installations are off track. (2/5)
100
Climate Change Committee @thecccuk.bsky.social · 20/03/2024
The Scottish Government is failing to achieve Scotland’s ambitious climate goals. There is still no comprehensive delivery strategy for meeting future emissions targets and actions fall short. (1/5)
