Our BirdNET-Pi detected its first Pacific koel of the season at 6 am in Chapel Hill - 15 days earlier than last year. E-bird data for Brisbane confirms this is on the early side for their arrival. ('Toowong' is derived from 'tuwong', the koel's indigenous phonetic name - Harrison, 1944).

We've clocked up 70,000+ bird-calls on BirdNET-Pi - and are starting to see some patterns. Read more at theca.org.au/birdnet-pi

Watch "Rush Hour at The Hut's Hive"! We're testing our #RPi Tetragonula carbonaria bee counter. < = exits, > = entrances. One minute's action at 2 pm on Tues Aug 11 - gave 134 entrances and 104 exits (accurate to about 2% - even better with less traffic!) More info at theca.org.au/bee-rush-hour

Our bee counter cam off to a good start - less than 0.5% diff between hive exits and entrances. Looks like Tregonula carbonaria flights may be longer on days with more flights? (Based on lag of best fitting curves for entrances vs exits)
Chart showing tha on days with more flights, flights may be longer.Stingless bees at hive entrance

It's a warm and sunny day in Brisbane - and THECA's native 🐝🐝 think so too. 16,000 exits and entrances already and 800 bees currently out - info from our RPi cam bee counter!
