He mentions that, and says the issue of whether this was cruel and unusual has risen higher as a result, but says that the pre-ban non-botched ones were agonising but that no-one ever consulted actual doctors in making the cocktail, but they did speak to vets. As in animal doctors, not ex-services

Did you listen to Malcolm Gladwell's podcast on the guy who came up with the 3-drug cocktail and the 'science' behind it? Was utterly jaw dropping, and blows apart the 'they don't feel a thing' BS

When he was FA Chair, David Triesman told me he was more concerned about state ownership of football than anything else - at the time mainly for its ability to drive and absorb inflationary pressures on player salaries beyond what was reasonably able to be competed with

Not so much - MDMA played a major role in driving down hooliganism in the late 80s. Euro 2000 massively aided by incredibly strong weed from Netherlands. Notable that most trouble in Belgium where a) less drugs and b) more incredibly strong beer c) policing much more antagonistic

Though it was always curious that the one department they never had _anyone_ in was DCMS. Never worked out if this was Coulson preparing the ground for NewsCorp's bid for Sky, or that Don Foster wasn't seen as reliable, but the LDs has MPs who could have handled the brief

🥚 You know those days that we're all glad to mostly see the back of, when women had no choices, and we had even less? Those days which governments have been increasingly apologising for? Let's bring those back, yeah, says a Shadow minister in the UK www.neilobrien.co.uk/p/bring-back...

That way, the community can focus its efforts on buying the bricks and mortar of the old pub/finding new space for a pub without also having to buy the licence at the same time

Dave McGrath-Boyle @theboyler.bsky.social · 21/08/2026
You could counter its effects - slightly - whilst not 'interfering' in the market to the extent that it would collapse the pensions/balance sheets of existing licence holders. Create a new 'community licence' which only gets used once the community's last licensed pub has closed, and isn't tradeable

I've just read the synopsis on wiki, and it feels like it would maybe land very differently for an adoptee? I mean, it's got all the things adoptees struggle with and non-adopted people are fascinated by (identity secrecy! genetic bewilderment! estrangement! reunion gone very bad! Oh, and incest!)

Repositioning the altar and priest at the centre, rather than the front isn't _merely_ architectural. This is revolutionary stuff, set in concrete, about the role of the church versus the laity, and the point of the Priest as servant of the people to intercede with the divine, rather than gatekeeper

They also represented the same spirit which would rewrite doctrine and liturgy in the Second Vatican Council in bricks and mortar. They did very _incredibly_ radical things in the context of an institution which sees a golden thread of tradition lasting nearly 2 millennia

or to a lesser extent my own school's church on an overspill estate in North Manchester, Our Lady and St Paul's. (all of these are northern; dunno about southern English and Welsh churches). All signal an ease with modernity in the church - or at least a few go-ahead dioceses at any rate

There is an astonishing flourishing of modernist and almost avant garde architecture in post war Catholic buildings which lasts about 30 years. There's obv Liverpool cathedral, but also places like St Mary's Church in Leyland, St Augustine's, St Peter's Seminary in Glasgow,

The pubCos are mostly selling the estate off to fund bonuses and boost profits, rather than using them to pay down the loans they took to buy the pubs in the first place. It's less that pubs are unprofitable as that they are not _as_ profitable as pubs as they are as development opportunities
031
Dave McGrath-Boyle @theboyler.bsky.social · 16/08/2026
Thousands of communities who have lost pubs because the test of viability is really 'is the asset value significantly more than the profit margin' and former will always trump latter in anything but the long term, unless planning reform forces the former off the table.

(obv in reality you'd be not for profit in reality because there shouldn't be any profit knocking about for decades because any spare cash is for renewing the infrastructure. But that's the biggest issue-the cost of renewal is only achievable by the state, which should own it & capture any savings)

Dave McGrath-Boyle @theboyler.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
The fact that it's not-for-profit is a red flag too. Co-ops aren't NFP! One way to cohere a polity and make this resonate is to give dividends in the form of discounts - we made a profit and we pay it you as an owner in the form of a reduction in your bill next year.

Dave McGrath-Boyle @theboyler.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
As a co-operative policy and practice nerd, I'm incredibly sceptical and more than a little afraid of any solution which proposes to build the polity after the economics. The polity never gets built, and the model never works and never resonates with citizens, but does brand toxification of co-ops

Dave McGrath-Boyle @theboyler.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I can kind of see how it would work, but huge devil in the detail. For mutualisation over time to work, you need informed & engaged representatives to control the mutual shares, but the model proposed is finance-friendly and incredibly top-down. Why and how would ordinary folks get involved?
