James Brown’s The Payback (1973) was made for Hell Up in Harlem, but the producers rejected it as “the same old James Brown stuff” and hired Edwin Starr instead. Thank goodness James put it out anyway. ​​​​​​​​​​

Bobby Womack's 1972 soundtrack for "Across 110th Street" is a masterpiece. Rather than glorifying the typical pimp or pusher tropes, Womack’s lyrics channeled the desperation of Harlem residents trapped in poverty and systemic failure.

Cotton Comes To Harlem (1970 is a film about two cops looking for eighty-seven thousand stolen bucks in a bail of cotton. It inspired more films during the '70s, including more action-packed numbers like Shaft and Super Fly.
