"...a grade-point average of 3.8 instead of a 3.9 can mean rejection from law and medical schools." This is an encapsulation of what I mean. The average GPA for med school acceptance is ~3.75. If a student is rejected with a 3.8, there are likely other BIG issues with that application.

I've been a college professor for 12 years (full time) and an adjunct for years before that. Pieces like this are written by faculty who are uninterested in learning about grades, their history, and how grades can be influenced by the actual work done in the classroom.

Nothing in this piece shows grade inflation as anything more than a desire to 'sort' students. This author has a grade distribution in mind before the class even starts. Grade inflation is the boogeyman- something to talk about as a problem, without an attempt to understand what a grade even means.
