“Glass Seed Game (Reflected Inboxes)”, c. 2019

Two shallow trays connected by hinges divided into 14 compartments for use in Mancala games. The 12 smaller compartments each contain 4 colored glass pieces. The tray is made of an orange, stony material.

The following text accompanies this sculpture:

“2 players face each other in Mancala games and move 48 pieces called ‘seeds’ between 2 rows of 6 pits called ‘houses’ in a counter clockwise motion. Capturing more than half of the seeds in the larger pit to the player’s right (called a ‘scoring house’) is the game’s objective.

Seeds are often made of colored glass. They trigger strong youthful sense memories for me from the cusp of user interface design as the internet started to become what it would be. Fantasy slider bars on the screen scrolling through reams of new things were made to look like you could reach out and touch them. I imagined they would feel like a mancala seed in my fingers.

Simulated illusionistic space as a means to acclimate users to the reality of a digital environment is called ‘skeuomorphism’. It’s gradually disappearing as graphic design trends skew towards flatness, but skeuomorphs linger on in dogeared paper, inbox tray, and folder icons. The phenomenon exists outside computers, too: many things are made with the hallmarks of materials that weren’t involved in their production. Plastic countertops and floors are made to look like stone or wood even if there’s no practical reason for them to have marbling or grain.

When I played with the glass seeds, I knew the game as ‘Mancala’, but Mancala is a broad name. Growing up in New England I was probably more specifically playing Ouril, a variant from Cape Verde popular with the local Cape Verdean community.

Spending time navigating the world online no longer seems exciting, novel, inspirational, or sensual through the prism of those glass seeds. I miss that naive feeling, but now I at least know what game I was playing.”

I’m so disappointed. I pulled off the highway to get a good picture of an LED highway sign advertising a local municipal event that said “STOP BY IT WILL BE EPIC !!!!!” but the exposure couldn’t catch the LED. I was going to post it and say “it’s lit”. It was going to be so lit.

Hello computer. Decompile and distill this guy’s game. Make it impossible to achieve any missions. This is an unusual French cleat in that it doesn't have a single up or down orientation. Either of the angled edges can catch and hold weight, which allows it to do another thing I hope for the two of you: that at times when your worlds seem turned upside down, the support will still be there.”
