While it’s not clear yet whether CFTC will give the green light, as @davidhill.bsky.social points out, Trump-appointed chair Michael Selig has been a friend to prediction markets so far. thebaffler.com/salvos/infin...
Both Kalshi and Polymarket brought Donald Trump Jr. on as an adviser. Trump Sr. named Michael Selig, a lawyer who previously represented crypto firms, as chair (and sole member) of the CFTC. Selig withdrew the agency’s objections to various prediction market contracts, referring to them as the “prior administration’s frolic into merit regulation.” Selig has chosen not to regulate prediction markets but their regulators: “See you in court,” he told states trying to sue Kalshi and Polymarket. Furthermore, he has issued a full-throated defense of their claim to be insurance-like financial products under the umbrella of federal regulations.

The only guarantee in today’s America is that everything’s a gamble. Our latest issue considers risk and its many industries: insurance, prediction markets, payday lending, and the high-stakes, low-brow world of improv comedy.

The early days of insurance look a lot like Polymarket or Kalshi. In our new issue, @davidhill.bsky.social looks at the beginnings of an industry the prediction markets are trying to emulate: thebaffler.com/salvos/infin...

Her case has helped expose the mechanisms shielding immigration enforcement. Even before border agents and ICE drew national outrage for the deaths of Renée Good and Alex Pretti, their lethal power was tested, honed, and normalized in encounters with noncitizens like Marisol.

At a moment when the public has begun to grasp the sweeping, largely unchecked authority of the U.S. Border Patrol, Marisol’s trial will likely serve as something of a referendum on the agency’s license to kill.

Marisol survived the shooting. She returned to Mexico. But she suffers from memory loss and debilitating headaches and other complications from a bullet fragment in her brain. Marisol and her supporters want justice—or at the very least, compensatory damages.

The exact details of what happened next are the subject of an upcoming lawsuit, but at 5 p.m., Border Patrol agent Jason Dattilo raised his government-issued handgun and fired one shot into the car. It struck Marisol in the forehead, just above her eye.

It had been a difficult journey, one she’d been hesitant to take in the first place. Marisol thought she’d get arrested, spend a few hours locked up, and then be deported.

On June 16, 2021, Marisol García Alcántara and five other women successfully crossed the border into New Mexico. When the car they were riding in got pulled over by Border Patrol, her first reaction was relief. 🧵

The Palos Verdes Peninsula hosts some of the most coveted real estate in California. But it’s hugely vulnerable to landslides. Protecting these properties is costly, onerous, and ineffective—and the public has been footing the bill. thebaffler.com/latest/slips...
The local governments of the peninsula could—and probably should—mandate retreat through eminent domain, but the option is politically anathema. No politician has seriously proposed it, in part because doing so would be an acknowledgment that the area is no longer habitable, a message that runs counter to the interests of real estate developers, property owners, and officials seeking reelection. It would also theoretically require even bigger buyout programs at market rates that remain artificially high because the risks associated with building in hazardous landscapes have long been subsidized through disaster relief, infrastructure spending, and legal guarantees of compensation, effectively socializing the costs of risky private development decisions.

What does it take to afford a writing career? For our latest issue, we asked seven writers about the side gigs or full-time jobs they’ve taken on—waiting tables, watching for forest fires, cuddling lonely strangers, and more. thebaffler.com/odds-and-end...
The accounts here describe the financial compromises, the emotional costs, the physical exhaustion, the moral injury, and the drain on the imaginative reserves that are the costs of a side gig. They describe the way that writing itself can serve as a form of spiritual recovery from the labor that funded it. They also detail the satisfactions of service work and manual toil, employment outside the cosmopolis, and mastering skill sets more material than putting words to paper. The forum, I hope, serves as a partial history of the hidden labor that makes possible the poems, stories, essays, books, and periodicals you read.
