The September equinox is today, 23rd September, 2026. Today the sun will be directly above the equator for a moment as it makes its way south. And that moment is now, 01:04 Dublin time (i.e. 01:04 IST, 00:04 UTC).

Yes. They don't vary by much over a normal person's lifetime, and the leap years are there to manage the variance, but ... yes. We wrote a post about it back in 2019, showing the variances in the solstices and equinoctes over the next 1,000 years: www.gibiris.org/eo-blog/post...

However, see note 1). If we had the precise formula for the progress of sunset times throughout the year, it would probably be easier to come up with the correct half-way point. 6/6

030

The Grand Drawing In @theauldsthretch.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

So, our read is as follows: 1) It's not linear. This isn't a surprise as the change of the sunset times from solstice to solstice is also not linear (it's sinusoidal ... on it's mother's side). 2) We get closer if we don't consider the solstices, rather the earliest and latest sunset times. 5/6

281

The Grand Drawing In @theauldsthretch.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

The half-way date between them was the 18th September (with a sunset time of 18:33:12 UTC, 19:33:12 Dublin local time) and the half-way sunset time is 18:31, which is between that of the 18th Sept and the 19th (18:30:45 UTC), being slightly closer to that of the 19th. 4/6

130

The Grand Drawing In @theauldsthretch.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

If, instead of the solstices, we look at the earliest and latest sunset times, we get slightly different dates and times. The latest sunset this year was at 20:56:56 UTC (20:56:56 Dublin local time) on the 24 June and the earliest sunset will be at 16:05:43 on the 13th December. 3/6

120

The Grand Drawing In @theauldsthretch.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

The half-way date between these dates is the 20th Sept. (yesterday), and the half-way sunset time is 18:32 UTC (19:32 Dublin local time). The actual sunset time for yesterday was 18:28:19, 4 minutes off, and the date with a sunset time closest to 18:32 was the 18th (last Friday). 2/6

The Grand Drawing In @theauldsthretch.bsky.social · 21/09/2026

So. We did a little looking. The equinox this year will be on the 23rd Sept. The sunset time will be 18:20 UTC (19:20 Dublin local time). The June solstice was the 21st June (with a sunset time of 20:56:37 UTC) and the December solstice will be the 21st Dec. (sunset: 16:07:37). 1/6
