Rory was out, his understudy was excellent. Agree on Graham's writing. It just didn't work properly. Some bits were brilliant, others truly tedious. There's a great 90 minute 1 man play in there somewhere.

Exactly, and the more theatre I see, the more I seem to want go take shears. It didn't. And worse, they revealed the "big scene" earlier on, so it was no surprise it had no impact later. Mostly director, heavy handed, trying to control the space instead of letting the actors discover how to use.

I got a bit fed up with that vibe in the end, but I can see why others enjoyed it. You must, LOL. I figured out the twists a bit too early, I guess. Can't help on the telly, couldn't tell you about any of the cast in that respect. But it works for sure.

Yes. Great to hear. The cliffhanger was well done, wasn't it. "Dear England" really did bring in the broadest audience too. Really is trying to be a NATIONAL theatre, isn't it.

Theatremonkey @theatremonkey1.bsky.social · 24/09/2026

THE STORY: National Theatre. Delightfully high proportion of Global Majority young people in the matinee audience yesterday, having a great time. Very different demographic from the usual NT afternoon crowd. Proof positive that "if you stage it, they will come" perhaps?

1 six hour play = 1 contract per team member, a bit of extra electricity, but you can only charge for one ticket. 2 x 3 hour plays = 2 contracts, 2 tickets need to be sold. More profitable until folk won't pay it. If Potter had been called a single show, maybe no need to cut it?
