Is Jet Zero failing? 🛫 The Jet Zero Strategy was meant to keep aviation within our carbon budgets. It's falling short, which means the benchmark that Heathrow expansion could be judged against isn't good enough. Watch @chadceleste.bsky.social explain why 👇

Why should aviation get a bigger share of the carbon budget? Other sectors are decarbonising, but aviation is projected to become the UK’s largest emitting sector by 2040. Is this fair?

🚨🗣️ Final call! Protect communities from more noise and air pollution, and help keep aviation's emissions within safe limits. Say no to Heathrow 3rd Runway. Drop by booth G5 at the Labour Party Conference to discuss the issue with AEF’s @chadceleste.bsky.social and Bertie Lloyd.

Why are we expanding an airport only to have to throttle the demand because of its emissions? @drscottarthurmp.bsky.social asks THE big question about whether expanding Heathrow makes any sense. 1/4

Trains not planes 🚂 💚 Now would be a great time for the new Government to throw out the climate-wrecking Heathrow third-runway plan, and focus on what the public actually want: more international trains.

It would be great to see @miattafahnbulleh.bsky.social introduce a tax that makes the polluter pay for their pollution. Currently, the only tax paid when flying is APD. No VAT, no fuel tax. 2/2 www.aef.org.uk/2024/10/29/i...

When AT LEAST 95% of emissions come from flights, using this framing without the caveats inevitably leads to greenwashing claims, as campaigners from Bristol Airport Action Network, rightly point out. 3/3

Aviation is Europe's fastest-growing source of emissions, and as this new analysis from @transportenvironment.org shows, most of it is going completely unpriced. 🧵 1/4

UK aviation decarbonisation relies heavily on SAFs, but the Whitehead Review proposed another policy pillar: Greenhouse gas removals (GGRs). Matt Finch of EcoMatters outlines what this policy could look like: www.aef.org.uk/2026/01/29/c...

Let’s not mince our words: net zero is the plan to stop climate change. So why is the British media separating these terms? Richard Black compares it to discussing a medicine's benefits without mentioning the condition it treats. eciu.net/media/press-...

In the UK aviation only pays APD and no fuel duty, and there is almost no carbon pricing on long-haul flying. This essentially means that the UK Government is subsidising the most polluting form of transport. 2/4

“Achieving net-zero aviation by 2050 is well within our collective grasp. SAF will undoubtedly play a key role in this journey, especially in the short to medium term. But it will not, by itself, be enough,” argues the World Economic Forum. www.weforum.org/stories/2025...

Among other issues, such as feedstock scarcity etc., SAFs can only reduce the overall emissions by a maximum of 70%. These emissions savings come from the lifecycle of SAF production. The same amount of CO2 is produced at the tailpipe of the plane as when you burn kerosene. 2/3

Because SAFs create the same amount of CO2 at the tail pipe of the plane as traditional kerosene. The emission saving comes from the carbon cycle in its production. You are essentially excluding the most important part of the equation 🤯 4/5

While progress has been made in terms of mandating alternative fuels, a lot of work still needs to be done. This includes creating policy to reflect non-CO2 emissions from planes as well as making sure that aviation pays for its pollution. 2/2

Importantly, net-zero-compatible growth undermines the case for airport expansion: expanding Heathrow, Gatwick and Luton will provide significantly more airport capacity than is needed to meet both the Department for Transport’s and CCC’s passenger demand projections. 2/2

CCC’s CB7 advice sends a clear message that aviation is behind the curve on decarbonisation - they expect the sector to go from being the fifth most emitting sector today in terms of the UK’s greenhouse gas emissions, to joint-first by 2040. 3/6
A graph showing the UK's highest emitting sectors pathways to net zero. Agriculture and aviation become joint first in 2040 as other industries decarbonise at a faster rate.
