5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 27/01/2025A few years ago there was an irruption of grosbeaks to southern Ontario. This occurs when there’s a shortage of pine cones in the boreal forests and birds come south in search of food. Evening and Pine grosbeaks in my yard. #birds #Ontariobird #grosbeak #feeders 020
5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 26/01/2025This weeks theme is Feeder Birds A young Ruby-throated hummingbird came to its feeder but stopped dead in its tracks when it noticed an unwelcome visitor also enjoying the sweet nectar. A Downy woodpecker had been enjoying the sweet water too. The hummer decided to share. #birds #hummingbird 070
5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 24/01/2025The attractive Long-tailed Duck breeds in the high Arctic and spends winters mostly along ocean coasts. In all plumages they have extravagantly long tails. These prodigious divers can feed as deep as 200 feet, swimming with their wings, catching invertebrates and small fish. #birds #ducks 090

5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 22/01/2025It’s Gull Time! Most people aren’t aware that Ontario has several different types of gulls. The common we see year round ( searching for French fries) are Ring-billed gulls. I’ll be posting those and other gulls I’ve seen in Ontario. And some I’ve seen on my trips away. 130

5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 21/01/2025Northern Shovelers are also unique. They often have their heads down in shallow wetlands, busily sweeping their bills side to side, filtering out aquatic invertebrates and seeds from the water. #birds #strangeducks #Ontariobirds 160
5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 20/01/2025Always a snappy dresser is the Northern pintail. Male northern pintail ducks have a white stripe down their neck and long tail feathers, while females are mottled brown and have a pointed tail. 160
5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 20/01/2025It’s always an event when you see a hybrid. In biology, a hybrid is the offspring resulting from combining the qualities of two organisms of different varieties, subspecies, species or genera through sexual reproduction. On the left is a hybrid of a Redhead duck and Canvasback. 180
5B group @the5b.bsky.social · 20/01/2025We also had a Cinnamon Teal in a local wetland. Far away from its regular migratory pattern. 160
