Nothing says democracy like Canadian maple syrup and Belgian waffles.
Two weird things happened Wednesday at the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France.
European Commission President Ursula von der
Leyen invited hockey-obsessed Canada to become the effete foreign bureaucracy's first
"associate member." And she insisted on addressing Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney as "dear Mark." She did it twice.
"We share one ocean, one set of values, one way of seeing the world," said Ms. von der Leyen. "But above all, dear Mark, Europe and Canada believe in democracy."
Some of the 27 EU countries touch the Atlantic.
Four, by my count. You call that sharing an ocean?
While the Canadians are a great people with a proud history, they don't put mayonnaise on french fries and they don't iron their jeans. It's a hugeOn the democracy point, the European project believes in rule by the people about as much as the National Hockey League believes in hugging it out. When Irish voters rejected the Treaty of Nice in a 2001 referendum, Brussels said, effectively, why don't you try again? A year later, the Irish miraculously changed their minds in a second referendum. Love that democracy!
When voters in France and the Netherlands rejected the European constitution in 2005, the EU folded the text into the Treaty of Lisbon, which required only parliamentary approval. When Irish voters again spoiled the fun, Brussels again asked for a do-over. European democracy means letting the people vote until they get it right.
Ms. von der Leyen and Dear Mark may share a desire to poke the American president in the eye.
But Canadians know they share more than an ocean with their American cousins. They share a 5,525-mile border, a free-range outlook, an irreverent sense of humor and a soft spot for Ryan Gosling. They also share a distinctly non-European belief that people make their own success in life.
Mr. Trump isn't going to be president forever. So take it easy, eh? Don't run off with the first exotic political and economic union that smiles at you.

However, Gary Marcus, an Al researcher, showcases disapproval of Huang's claims. "Huang gave no evidence and no definitions, which feels to me like an effort at a takeover of a scientific question by corporate fiat," Marcus said.
"Declaring victory without a definition simply muddies the waters," he added.
Marcus also shared a 10-point definition of AGI, highlighting that Astra only meets one or two benchmarks. "By conventional definitions, Astra still fall short," he said.

MacArthur is a 2-star Sergeant - corporal, apparently in the Canadian Forces based on the Chevrons such as they are.
A screen cap from one of General Trump’s slop purportedly showing General Douglas MacArthur with 2 1/2 stars on his epaulette and 2 1/2 chevrons on his shoulder. General MacArthur as General of the Army was entitled to wear five stars on his epaulette, and as far as I know there’s no record of half stars being used for any US Army Rank. Two Chevrons in the US Army indicate rank of corporal, three, a sergeant. In US Army insignia the chevrons point up, in Canadian Military insignia the chevrons point down as illustrated here.

Oh boy, where do I even begin? First, the way Meta rolled out Muse is absolutely sketchy, to put it politely. Everyone with a public Instagram or Facebook account was automatically opted in to allow Muse to use content on their profiles. Meta didn't send any notification to users informing them that Muse was live and that their content could be used in the image generator.

Huge: Tomorrow, Anthropic officially restores global access to Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5, its most powerful Al models to date 69
But Fable is not coming back as the same model.
It is coming back with capability shaved off, after a jailbreak reportedly showed it could help identify and demonstrate software vulnerability exploitation.
Enough for Commerce to treat it as a potential cyber-risk event and force Anthropic to pull Fable 5 and Mythos 5 globally.
Now they are returning, but with new guardrails:
→ Cybersecurity-adjacent prompts get caught earlier
→ Some coding/debugging workflows route back to
Opus 4.8
→ Usage is capped at 50% of weekly limits through July 7
→ Access then moves to credits-only
And this is by far the most interesting precedent: a frontier model launched, a jailbreak was found, Washington stepped in, and the model came back weaker.
It seems that the next Al launch won't just be judged by benchmarks, latency or pricing.
It will be judged by whether governments believe the model is safe enough to stay online.
Turns out, the hardest part of frontier Al is no longer building the model.

Van Jones is havin’ his “He who fucks nuns, will later join The Church” moment in real time.
Jones's activism was also spurred by seeing the deep racial inequality in New Haven, Connecticut, particularly in prosecution of drug use. Jones has said, "I was seeing kids at Yale do drugs and talk about it openly, and have nothing happen to them or, if anything, get sent to rehab ... And then I was seeing kids three blocks away, in the housing projects, doing the same drugs, in smaller amounts, go to prison."
[7] After graduating from law school with his Juris Doctor in 1993, Jones moved to San Francisco, and according to his own words,
"trying to be a revolutionary" [12] He became affiliated with many left activists, and co-founded a socialist collective called Standing Together to Organize a Revolutionary Movement (STORM). It protested against police brutality, held study groups on Marxism, Leninism, and Maoism, and aspired to establish multi-racial socialism. [12]

He greased the skids on the road to infotainment perdition, for sure. He was also responsible for the weird colourization debacle of the eighties and nineties.
Colourized still image from the 1940’s Classic « Casablanca ». Humphrey Bogart as Rick is seated at a table, a chess board is on the table in front of him. Rick appears to be playing the white side of the board, a half dozen or so black piece appear to have been captured. Rick is holding a lit cigarette in his right hand and a Marie Antoinette style champagne coupe is close to his right hand as well.
The stark contrasts the Film Noir original are relatively subdued to nearly pastel composition.
Most film lovers and cinephiles loathed the colourization fad and this image is an example of the reasons why.

It’s impossible to underestimate how corrosive the GenAI dynamic of euphoric banality is to software innovation. www.wheresyoured.at/the-ai-indus...
AI is actively poisonous to the future of the tech industry. It’s expensive, unproductive, actively damaging to the learning and efficacy of its users, depriving them of the opportunities to learn and grow, stunting them to the point that they know less and do less because all they do is prompt. Those that celebrate it are ignorant or craven, captured or crooked, or desperate to be the person to herald the next era, even if that era sucks, even if that era is inherently illogical, even if that era is fucking impossible when you think about it for more than two seconds.
