The most depressing ad this year depicts a content creator saying how it can be kinda lonely, but not after they've "hired" N Grok Bots. We can't be letting people who are already socially isolated fall deeper into this shit, and the "hiring" wording is so problematic. How do we fix this?

So ICE agents are getting fired before their probationary periods are up and are having to repay the $50,000 signing bonus. I love this for them.

When I gave my keynote last week about community defense in Minnesota, someone from Ukraine came up to me afterward and said thank you for talking about what it’s like to be under attack and fight back, because most people can’t relate. I wish we couldn’t, but hey Ukrainian friends: we see you.

It is frustrating trying to be an honest, considerate, hardworking person, when many signs indicate it is much more lucrative right now to be a liar and a grifter with no moral core or ethical framework for daily life. I just hope these people eventually get what they deserve.

Holy shit, this exact thing almost gave me an aneurysm last week. Not only was the meeting useless, I had to write comments on an auto generated action item that was fucking useless; the proposed action was already addressed in the meeting, and the transcript that no-one reads showed that.

Hello from a ~12yr old Macbook Pro, though it's not running MacOS. Still does everything I need - 6hrs of battery, browser apps, development, screen recording at 1080 without dropped frames. You don't need new hardware every 1-5 years. You are lazy and purchasing things makes you feel good. Why?

Here's how to deal with incompetent AI chatbots; a live example, taken from my recent chat with Ally's bot: Bot: "I got my wires crossed. Can you try asking me in a different way?" Me: "No" Bot: "I'll pass the chat to a human associate who can help you." This is the way.

You can even use OBS to screen record at native resolution, while doing all the other stuff and using pretty window transparency effects. It most certainly does not _want_ to do all that, and you will pay by having a very hot CPU and rapidly declining battery. But it _will_ do it.

That's not to say it's *all* older software in the stack: - Caddy makes for a stupidly simple and reliable reverse proxy - Authelia is a great IAM solution There's a lot of ol' reliable going on too though: - Postfix - Prometheus / Grafana - FreeBSD (VNET jails, ZFS) - Puppet

After running my own mail servers again for about a full year now, I have no regrets. The biggest problem is finding clean address space; everything else is good system design and using tools that have been battle tested for decades

Don't let anyone scare you from running your own email server. Is it work to set up and maintain? Yes. It's nowhere near the doom and gloom hassle I've heard others purport though. Most of the effort is front loaded. If you feel motivated to do it, and you understand the upkeep needed, go for it.

I'm still writing code the hard way. I'm slow. I like to think critically about every line of code and fiddle with variable names until everything looks right. I treat code as a liability and try to ship only what's necessary. It's hard to imagine writing code any other way.
