I get gifted shampoo/conditioner twin packs and I will always run out of shampoo before I'm even 1/4 of the way through the conditioner so I've just got a little shameful collection of backlogged conditioner bottles.

It's just people trying to suppress their own shame for still being there by saying it's actually somehow your fault they can't quit because you didn't invent a cool enough alternative for them to make the transition completely painless.

Probably worth considering what the people behind our domestic data center buildup might intend for them as a backup plan post-bubble.

I'm pretty sure that even today if you recite "I will never vote for Newsom" three times into a mirror a vote scolder will appear and try to explain "okay but if it was him or a Republican you'd have to, right?"

So grindset oriented you look at your own leisure time and go "but what's in it for me?"

I think for a lot of these people the simpler explanation is that there's no long-term planning. They just want to hurt people today and even if you could give them all the Ghost of Christmas Future treatment showing them that it would 100% ruin their own lives someday they wouldn't change a thing.

Best case scenario would be for conservative voters exclusively to be convinced that they've got it sewn up without needing to vote anymore while everyone else keeps turning out.

There's an assymetry in how conservatives wishing ill on blue cities/states is treated as noise while liberals/leftists will scold themselves if anyone is caught wishing ill on red areas because some number of non-conservatives also live there and I don't think this arrangement is sustainable.

Dems love to use the excuse of "Oh no can't do that it would cut into all the important legislating we intend to do" regardless of how infinitesimally thin it is these days.

Except this is like the fourth or fifth time he's promised checks to people and so far in his term zero checks have gone out so even the greediest dope has to realize this promise is also going to evaporate.

The downside of the Lucas approach is once he changes something you will never see a legally available rerelease of the old version again.

Even if millions of people have heard of something that still leaves billions who haven't.

Some combination of his failing brain and the people around him curating his own personal alternative reality has completely convinced him that the closing of the Strait was actually his idea and we're doing it on purpose and it's a good thing. Things can only get funnier.

The US in particular having passed up so many opportunities to walk toward the future with some dignity is now in the "getting dragged kicking and screaming" phase because the decline of oil was always going to happen one way or another

I don't think knowledge would make these guys any more cautious when they're drowning in egotism. "Yeah that happened to those other guys but I'm build different."

There does seem to be a lot of overlap though between the centrist-leftist divide and the accommodationalist-oppositionalist one.

If you want the Dem electorate to stop turning to sketchy candidates with a million red flags because they're just THAT sick of putting their trust in an establishment that keeps failing them, that race specifically is non-negotiable. You have to win it.
000
Brian @thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Once again, if establishment Dems flub the Maine race after having commandeered it despite both strong national headwinds and Collins-specific scandals dragging her down, they're never gonna hear the end of it from the Platner people.

By "stalkers" he means the centrist Dems having apoplectic fits over Piker and trying to tank the race over it.

I'd like to remind people that the Jeffries/Kushner meeting was attempted in secret (and leaked by Kushner's people because they knew it would embarrass Jeffries), and also Kushner is Just Some Guy. He has no official governmental role.

People spent months "lesser-evil"-ing this guy in response to people saying he sucks and they'd never support him under any circumstances and it's well past time to admit the latter group was correct the whole time.

I'm gonna need triangulating Dems to start actually tracking down and interviewing these hypothetical swing voters who only switch sides when Dems betray a vulnerable minority because I've never seen one and they should be easy to find if there's supposedly more of them than the people betrayed.

Liberal iterated prisoner's dilemma particant: "I'm going to defect and that's that, but you better not. That would be extremely selfish and nasty of you, and whatever happens to us both will be your fault. Logically you should cooperate so at least one of us won't suffer."

It's not too hard to find people vocally angry with Talarico right now so if there's significantly more people with opposite feelings where are they? Shouldn't be hard to spotlight some.

Brian @thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
"He's clearly gaining votes..." Okay so is this person going to produce one of these alleged voters who's only come around on Talarico recently? Have they even personally met one?

The people who came before who used bluster as a strategy and thought there would be no consequences will never understand that the actual consequence is that someone believed them and then that idiot wound up in their shoes.

Like with WaPo both outcomes are acceptable to the people in charge, though. They're not gonna lose sleep over their investments in propaganda going belly-up because killing a piece of legacy media is still a consolation prize.

Mind-boggling sums of national wealth spent to achieve less than nothing. It only makes you madder at the people who balk at the miniscule price tags of modest social programs.

Wait, does he attribute the left-liberal opposition to AI to clownish fears of Skynet rather than the tech being annoying, costly, unethical, and bad for communities and the environment? That's adorable.

Brian @thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
What we've seen is that while some Dem voters have responded to this by further retreating into a fantasy that their leaders must be planning or doing secret good deeds offscreen, a lot more people are coming around to a proper "throw the bums out" party revolt which is the only real path.

This was the case with Palestinians as well. People do not understand that their calls for "self-sacrifice" are impossible to meet because the sacrifice being made is of an entire group of people and no individual has the right to say "yeah sure sacrifice all of us it's fine."
0311
Brian @thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
All the flippant arguments about self-sacrifice from people who know they'll never be in a similar situation also fail to grasp that there's no way for individuals to jump on the grenade here. No one has the moral authority to permit an assault on their whole community.

Vote scolders have been doing their thing for so many electoral cycles without consequence (for them) that I think they just have no clue how much anger and resentment and bad blood they're rapidly accruing.

Maybe a world where politicians/candidates and the media are completely hostile toward one another isn't the ideal world, but it's definitely the game theory equilibrium world media have unintentionally fumbled their way into.
010
Brian @thatiscalledbrian.bsky.social · 13/09/2026
I really think vote scolders do not realize the fire they're playing with. People are being pushed past their breaking points and trotting out these crappy old lesser evil talking points is starting to cause permanent ruptures in the coalition.

I remember very early on there were people trashing the guy based solely on the vibes of being a very loudly religious dude and I guess all those people get to take a victory lap if they want it. I also don't expect the next Dem trying to run in that lane will get a free pass.

Thing is these guys don't wanna hustle to win. Winning is not even at the top of the list. They want to schmooze and attend functions and get a big donor check cut to their campaign that they can funnel into good-paying consultancy jobs for their friends/kids/friends' kids/kids' friends.

It's getting harder to believe that people who support "grand bargains" and capitulation as means to defuse hot button issues that somehow never work actually ever believed their own arguments and weren't always just trying to weaken the defenses from inside to help Republicans win.
