In my opinion, I wouldn't really say that Pac-Man Tilt was a good game. Pac-Man was kinda hard to control, especially when it comes to the stage mechanics. It's also really painful to get gold medals in each level too. It's been a long time since I've played Tilt, and I wouldn't really recommend it.

I swear, Java's Color object is really weird. You expect the RGB values to be bytes, but they're integers instead. Even constructing them with Color(rgb) or Color(red, green, blue) feels off imo. #java #rgb #rgba #computer #computers #programming #coding #eclipse #intellij #netbeans #linux #apache

So yesterday on the official Pac-Man Discord, I showed that I can combine multiple file data into a single byte array in Java, which is useful for gathering all the program ROM data in Pac-Man. Made some significant progress in reverse-engineering Pac-Man. ✨✌️ #devlog #romhack #romhacks #pacman

I'm not really happy about this choice, since I've been working hard for quite some time, only to go back to the drawing board like 2 times already. But I don't think I really have a choice. I might gonna have to switch to Java just to continue on with my dream project, which kinda sucks imo.

I'm saying Swing is easy because it's already packaged with Java, so I don't need to focus on building anything from source. But what I do need to focus on is Gradle, a build tool that I'm not really familiar with. I'm also going to work with Eclipse, which isn't really friendly on Linux as well.

The reason why I'm thinking about this change is because I could not, for the life of it, build Qt5. I don't know why, but I just could not. That being said, I can't use Qt5 when it comes making GUI from Relaxian, my Pac-Man level editor. Swing is pretty much the easier choice imo.

And yes, if you're going to type in the comments, I know that Rehydrated exists on Steam. But I'm talking about the original game on the GameCube, PS2, and Xbox. Would be really cool to have this game reverse-engineered, and ported to the PC someday, like a Unity, Unreal, and Godot port.

What I'm trying to say is that I'll continue to use C for my projects, but I'll only make my ROM-hacking tools for Mac and Linux for the time being. I'll probably think about putting them on Windows, but Windows is an entirely different beast compared to Mac and Linux in my opinion. :/

But Windows still has its fans. But making cross-platform applications can get really messy and disorganized. Even if I used Java, which has a more modern file management system (java.nio), distributing code, libraries, and repositories can get really complicated, from my experience.

While that could work, it just still feels weird to put them in a directory designed for executables in my opinion. So what is my solution? Probably ditch the idea of designing my ROM-hacking tools for Windows, and keep them on Mac and Linux. After all, Windows is pretty much a dying OS imo.

Bottom line: Windows is just weird when developing applications, while Mac and Linux are great at doing that. That's also a problem when using CMake because where am I supposed to put my shared libraries at if Windows doesn't have a library folder? Program Files?

Plus, to make matters worse, Windows does not have /usr/local/bin and lib. Although it does have Program Files, there's no dedicated directory designed for shared libraries. Plus, Windows can only use their shared libraries (.dll) when they're in the same directory as their exe file.

And windows.h has a lot of weird and unfamiliar functions, like GetFullPathNameA(), and it just returns a type called DWORD, which is something I don't even know much about, and working with directories is just very weird on Windows in my opinion.
