Beef production has been the largest driver of deforestation this century. Over the last two decades, around 128 million hectares of forest have been cleared to make way for agriculture and forest plantations. That’s an area five times the size of the United Kingdom.

With all of this rogue AI business - if the tech bros are scared of their own creation why don't they just stop doing it? Turn the servers off, stop involving computers and the internet where they needn't be.

Maybe it's time to start keeping things as paper copies again. I never did understand why we made everything digital in the first place when ransomware attacks were common even before AI agents started going rogue.

You jest, but my hometown had a volunteer emergency responder who switched to biking for emergencies near his house because he lost his license from an excess of DUIs. He had a backpack first aid kit. Things that only happen in a village of a few thousand 🤣

Hot take but more Christians should be biking and using public transit. It hits 3 CST themes - solidarity (being present with less privileged people), care for creation (reduced pollution), and preferential option for the poor (supporting systems that help the most vulnerable members of society).

Quito, Paris, Prague, Kochi (Kerala), and Dayton OH Quito for the architecture, geography, and food. Paris for the art nouveau details, cafes, and fashion culture. Prague for the historic architecture. Kochi for the food, tropical weather, and the interesting history. Dayton for the community :)

This morning in Biddeford, Maine, a 26-year-old man said goodbye to his wife and daughter and left for work. Moments later he was dead, shot in the head by ICE agents, the second man ICE has killed in six days. ICE is killing our neighbors. ICE cannot be reformed. Abolish ICE.

When I was a kid in Ecuador we could get sodas and gaseous water in glass bottles that were returned and reused by the company. Perhaps the US could figure out how to run a similar system.

In the case of my department, it says that the professor is actually teaching to the college level. The undergrads lack basic algebra and literacy skills, so if everyone passes that just means that the prof has been worn down into making the class absurdly easy.

Lots of good papers coming out in the mycorrhizal-mediated PSF/CDD space these days. I'm gonna have to take a few weeks off from lab and field work to catch up!

Republican politicians also pretend to know more about climate change than scientists. They don't have the humility necessary to listen to experts on any subject except enriching themselves.

Add to this the phrase "living on top of each other". I love living in a 1-bed apt, it's in a dense area so I can take the bus or walk most places. Grocery store, the movies, restaurants, work, church, cafes , farmer's market, cobbler, seamstress, etc. That far outweighs the benefits of a big house.

One of the big issues I think Nashville has right now is the lack of shade around town. The sun beats down here and the lack of shade makes most roads unwalkable. The way cars super-heat in uncovered lots and the reflection off roads makes driving miserable too.

Also, Park Happy LLC and Metropolis Parking are greedy and I will never give them another dollar. A parking spot should not earn more than a school teacher.

One of the best things about public transit is not having to find parking. Today I met up with a friend at a cafe where there were only 3 free parking spots, and the rest were $12/hour. For reference, and all-day bus pass is $4. Obviously a better price, not to mention the savings on gas.

Trying to revise a paper that I converted from PDF to word, this is awful. I'd rather just do edits in red pen and retype the whole thing than deal with this formatting nightmare.

Maybe this could make zerowaste alternatives more popular. I'm hopeful that the price hikes could encourage some people to make sustainable changes (e.g. shampoo/conditioner/soap bars without packaging instead of liquid versions that come in plastic)

Academics, did you use time in your PhD program to target a dream job? I'm interested in a small niche and would have to start incorporating things outside of my advisor's expertise to build the right resume. I don't know if that's a good idea if I want to graduate on time. Advice appreciated :)

Maria (⌐■_■) @thatecologist.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
Pop culture often depicts environmentalists in unflattering ways, and I think that's preventing people from adopting more sustainable lifestyles. I wonder if we can provoke change by deploying charismatic, attractive people to model behaviors that we want to become more widely adopted.

Maria (⌐■_■) @thatecologist.bsky.social · 19/04/2026
Has anyone studied provoking societal change through social/cultural capital? E.g. are people more likely to use native plants for landscaping if they see someone they respect/admire doing it? Will more people adopt zero waste practices if they see attractive people modelling those practices?

Literally started taking the bus because I don't want to scan a QR code to park, plus my phone battery dies so quickly that I don't use it outside of the house for anything non-essential. I'm not wasting precious battery percentages on QR code parking.

On a related note, coffee shops that play insanely loud music to prevent people from hanging out shouldn't exist. This is about Barista Parlor specifically, which everyone should already be boycotting for their labor issues.

Is anyone else cautiously optimistic about the silver linings of gas prices? I'm hoping this is what gets the average suburbanite to choose any form of transit other than massive SUVs/pickups. Maybe plastics won't be the cheap default packaging if prices stay high. Anything's possible
