That's a device that's fully up and being selectively blocked, not one that was offline, and each episode has a healthy reading immediately before and after it.

Every outage we counted has the device recording its own IP, gateway, successful gateway ping and "802.1x authenticated" in the same reading, with some targets answering in a few milliseconds while others time out.

The check runs on each PC, not from a server, so a device that's off or asleep just leaves a gap in its own log rather than a failure.

Changes went live to all locations & this problem is resolved. It has been such an incredible stress point for the past few days, not because of the nuts & bolts - I knew this was a networking issue - but because it was on my shoulders to prove that it could not be the devices themselves.

Thallanor @thallanor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I reported this to our Incident Response Team that I am a member of & in face of so much detail, the Networking Department began digging & sure enough, this 8-hour duration is something that they recently changed. They rolled it back to 1 hour at two locations & their connections became rock-solid.

Technicians found a reboot or disconnecting the network cable would also re-establish connection, which makes sense as that triggers a manual reauth.
100
Thallanor @thallanor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I know that our devices remain authed on the network every 8 hours, then need reauth. I don't know the inner workings. But with all of this, I was able to deduce that the devices were losing auth and the reauth was taking longer - 4m47s longer. This resulted in devices going offline for that long.

Thallanor @thallanor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I had millions of data points collected within days and was able to cross-reference with network traffic logs to determine that the issue was two-fold: a specific firewall rule was breaking and simultaneously, devices were dropping off of the network every 8h4m47s exactly. All of them.
100
Thallanor @thallanor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
I wrote a script that I pushed out to thousands of desktops and laptops and it started collecting data immediately, checking every two minutes for network issues and at the first sign of one, logging everything from the device.

Thallanor @thallanor.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
It has been a rough couple weeks. We've had campuses randomly going offline and before it could be escalated to the Networking Department, I was told that I had to ensure that it was not due to something device-side, even though my gut instinct was that this was a networking issue from the start.

The gazebo has likely gotten the most use, as it's great for small gatherings for events, but the heated chairs are probably my favourite, as they allow me to stay out at the fire longer and later and in crummier weather in the mountains. :) Though that little table gets a lot of use too.

My first Kuma product was a Super Bear Den Deluxe Gazebo a couple years ago (I love plaid) & it didn't fare so well, but was a defect, & how they handled the warranty was so amazing that I've just accumulated more & more of their gear. :) The stuffed pizza was a random experiment, but was good. :)

I decided to have a late supper on the first night of stuffed pizza. The crust ended up a bit burned at the edges where the heat from the Traeger bled around the griddle and the top appears more warned with a light bulb, but it was still good. Horrible picture taken in the light of a lantern.

My 3D printing got a small (or not-so-small) upgrade today. I've been using the Bambu Lab X1C for over two years, along with an A1 Mini. Today, my H2C arrived, with the 40W laser option. Not only is the build area larger, but it runs multiple induction hot ends, so much less printer poop now. Yay!
