this is an interesting exchange, and I think it says a lot about the american psyche. i think it's the false equivalence of 'theoretical exceptionally nice things which are available to certain individuals' with the actual conditions on the ground for all.
A social media exchange on BlueSky.
a post by rax 'levon honkers' king that reads:
"'oh so you want china to beat us' bro what the hell do i care leave me alone to the humble life i am trying to build for myself"
is quote tweeted by A.R. Moxon with the text
"Same people who seem to think it's bad for China to beat us at AI are perfectly fine with China beating us at high speed rail, solar energy, wind energy, shall we go on".
First reply from Creighton reads
"We aren't allowed to have good things in this country so it's only unacceptable if China beats us in something that fuckin sucks"
and a poster whose details have been readacted replies, to argue:
"We do have good things. Don't let the constant doom and gloom bombardment convince you otherwise."

Eby very much does not get everything right, but damn, he can drop a quote: “I feel sorry for the Americans. If you can’t be friends with Canada, then you almost certainly do not have a friend anywhere in the world - and that is a very lonely place to be.”

for any chickenshit elected official who's afraid that not pretending that lindsay graham wasn't an enthusiastic force for evil will reflect poorly on them, somehow, may i suggest simply saying nothing? the people you're trying to impress also thought this was very cool, actually:

Adult 1: "We didn't know it would"
Adult 2: "We just knew it was likely to"

UPDATE: we a have 'flat tax rate' bingo, folks!!!!!! ...who the fuck is putting words in your mouth now, Andy?
That’s why I put forward a motion asking staff for more information on reducing municipal wages and compensation costs over the next three years by up to 7%. This would not apply to frontline positions in transit, fire, and police.
Unfortunately, my Council colleagues did not support that motion.
As a result, it has become clear that holding a flat tax rate this year would instead require significant cuts to core, frontline services residents rely on - transit, fire, and police. And I am not willing to do that.

WHOOP! I have 'flat tax rate' bingo! you know, the term he got shitty about YESTERDAY because he claimed that people were putting words in his mouth? ...the line is right there in his release.
As a result, it has become clear that holding a flat tax rate this year would instead require significant cuts to core, frontline services residents rely on - transit, fire, and police. And I am not willing to do that.
I'll be bringing today's wage and compensation reduction motion back to Council in advance of next year's budget to give my colleagues and staff more time to consider its necessity.

it is incumbent on the municipality to be thoughtful about raising the revenues needed to cover the costs we are incurring. we live in a society and that means we should all contribute within our means such that we all benefit. there is necessarily a ceiling to 'do more with less', and we've hit it.

Zooming in on the dog's angry face with the ball still in his mouth, he says "ONLY SPEND".

ATTACKING PLACES OF WORSHIP IS UNACCEPTABLE.

COLLAPSE INTO HATE HERE AT HOME.

THERE IS NO PATH TO PEACE ANYWHERE THAT INCLUDES

I admit, I have been intimidated by many of the 4-5 ingredient classic Italian pastas because it’s so simple it kinda feels like a trap, you know? Dear reader - I did not fuck up on this day. Pulled off a very tasty pasta al limone. Follow your dreams, especially if they involve citrus.
Mis-en-place: a small number of ingredients sit on a quartz counter next to a stovetop. A package of spaghetti, a salt cellar filled with kosher salt, a dark wooden pepper grinder, and small bowls of grated Parmeggiano Regiano, grated garlic, lemon zest, and lemon juice.

Send help, the little hats are multiplying. Also, having to worry about stripes and multiple colours and tension and jogs is new and vexing, y’all. ..but they’re so wee. 🧶
A collection of baby-sized knit beanies on a desk. Two are lilac in colour, one positioned to show the heart shapes purled along the side of the hat, and one positioned to show the stripe pattern on the top of the hat as a result of the reduction in stitches to ‘close the tube’. There is a yellow beanie, also with hearts on the side, and a lilac-and-yellow striped beanie which is not my finest work.

It is, unfortunately, industry standard practice. Airlines justify it by citing high hourly wages, but it sure does feel like wage theft when the hours in which you're earning that pay are fixed - but the hours in which you're diluting your hourly wage with unpaid labour are extremely variable.

A screenshot of an email, that reads:

"Gang -

If you’re a news organization who is responsible for knowing what’s going on, then you should be aware that this piece of construction work is multi-faceted: https://www.halifax.ca/transportation/cycling-walking/expanding-network/brunswick-street-aaa-bikeway-complete-streets

A pedestrian plaza is being created at the foot of Citadel Hill, “creating a more welcoming gateway to downtown”, a right-turn slip lane is being removed, as these lanes are shown to increase the instances of pedestrians and cyclists being struck by careless motor vehicle drivers (1, 2, 3, 4), and overall sidewalk accessibility is being improved, because sidewalks are for people with mobility aids, too - in addition to the installation of the protected bike lanes, because it’s swell when people don’t have to risk their lives when they’re participating in active transportation in the busy downtown core.

You, however - chose to frame the ’story’ as an anti-bike piece, irresponsibly implying that the bike lane construction alone at a single intersection costs the city $4M, portraying this work as damaging to businesses (without acknowledging the increased traffic many businesses see when they are more accessible by bike in a downtown core where many prefer not to drive) and regurgitating the disproven myth that wider lanes make for safer streets (they do not - 1, 2, 3).

This is some hacky shit, folks - Fillmore and Houston might give you the gold star for that little hit piece, but I find it irresponsible and inflammatory at a time when car-centric propaganda is inciting a lot of anger, resentment, and aggression against people who would like not to be hit by cars. There’s little to no value in this ‘reporting’ as news - not to mention that your dishonest editing of interviews cut out Paul MacKinnon’s acknowledgement that the end result of this project will be a great improvement and left only negative-leaning comments.

Do better."

After a couple of scarves and a whole whack of dishcloths, behold: baby’s first foray into - knitting in the round with circular needles, - then reducing stitches and getting frustrated - but kind of sort of getting the whole ‘magic loop’ thing sorted (almost too late). A first attempt. 🧶
A teal beanie is held out for the camera. It’s not much to look at, but it’s a first attempt. Another angle of a beginner beanie.

Buried in the middle of this story about a pathetic old man and his delusions of grandeur is yet another example of JD Vance as the latest in a long line of absolutely spineless, miserable Republican men.
A screenshot of a Rolling Stone article:
"After two hours, the event reached its logical conclusion: political speeches. J.D. Vance briefly went first. “June 14 is of course the birthday of the Army,” Vance said. “It is, of course, the birthday of the president of the United States. And Happy Birthday, Mr. President.” He delivered the laugh line of the night. “It’s also my wedding anniversary,” he said before immediately leaving the stage."
