Yup! I've been casually following this. In recent weeks, compare Judge Katsas (D.C. Cir.) (using DoW, but then adding "[DoD] which now calls itself DoW") and Judge Immergut (D. Or.) ("[DoD] is the official name designated by statute") with Judge Davis (W.D.Tx.) (it's Department of War now).
Over the past two years, the Department of Defense (which now calls itself the Department of War) has greatly expanded its use of AI. During this time, Anthropic partially—but not completely—relaxed its use restrictions to accommodate the Department.FN4 -
4

The Department of Defense is also referred to as the Department of War, abbreviated as DoW. This Court refers to the agency as the Department of Defense because that is its official name designated by statute. See 10 U.S.C. § 111.From the scatered record provided by the parties, it appears that at least from October 2022, Zhou and some of Plaintiff's employees were prioritizing the acquisition of lucrative U.S. Department of War (then-Defense) contracts. See ECF No. 20-1 at pp. 1-5. Because Zhou is a citizen and native of the People's Republic of China, it appears that his control over and majority ownership (which had dipped to 94%) of Plaintiff would prove to be an insurmountable barrier to defense contracts. The statement of the Cornell Center on the Death Penalty Worldwide on the botched execution of Christa Pike is worth reading in full.

CCDPW Statement on the botched execution of
Christa Pike
October 1, 2026
Christa has endured punishment greater than any other person in the history of the American death penalty. The governor must commute Christa's sentence now.
-Randy Spivey, one of Christa Pike's lawyers
Last night, the State of Tennessee recklessly and callously sought to execute Christa Pike, notwithstanding the warnings of medical experts that Tennessee's lethal injection protocol would cause her to experience agonizing pain and psychological terror. Today, Christa remains in the hospital after the State tried and failed to execute her over the course of two hours. We do not know whether she will recover and what her recovery will look like. We are heartbroken for Christa's family, friends, and her legal team for having to endure the consequences of the state's barbarity.
After she was strapped to the gurney, the execution team inserted at least seven different needles in her left arm over the course of an hour. According to Christa's lawyer Randy Spivey, one of the needles appeared to be bent as they removed it from her arm. Medical experts had anticipated these problems based on Christa's small veins and a condition called thrombocytosis. When the executioners finally inserted an IV and injected the poison, something went terribly wrong. Although they injected her with double the usual dose of pentobarbital, Christa did not die.
While some media outlets reported that she was "snoring," her attorney and others stated that she whimpered, heaved, choked, breathed deep and raspy breaths, and moved frequently. At one point she stated that she felt her arm was burning up.
Christa's lawyers demanded that the prison halt the execution, they begged the courts and the governor to intervene, and they were met with stony silence while Christa suffered. Two and a half hours after the execution process began, the prison finally called an ambulance to take Christa to the hospital, where she is receiving t…In addition, psychologist Bethany Brand testified that because of Christa's severe post-traumatic stress disorder, being immobilized on a gurney while being poked and prodded with needles would very likely trigger a flashback of her rapes. Given this, we cannot separate the deliberate cruelty of Tennessee's actions from Christa's identity as a survivor of sexual violence. We therefore conclude that the gratuitous and extreme pain inflicted by Tennessee's executioners was not only torture but was also an act of gender-based violence.
The State of Tennessee bears the blame for this injustice. Its lawyers repeatedly discredited Christa's accounts of sexual violence, calling her a pathological liar even though her rapes at the ages of 11 and 17 were corroborated by court documents, police reports, and hospital records. One month before Christa's execution, the State finally acknowledged the truth of her suffering. By then it was too late. While one court issued a temporary stay of execution to examine the State's about-face, Tennessee appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court, which vacated the stay and cleared a path for Christa's execution. In their dissents, Justices Sotomayor, Kagan, and Jackson castigated their colleagues for failing to appreciate "our own fallibility" and for risking irretrievable harm. The majority of the Court was unmoved.
While many media outlets focus on the details of Tennessee's botched execution attempt, the real takeaway of this story is the flimsiness of the legal architecture upholding capital punishment. The courts knew that Christa could face unbearable pain during her execution. They knew that being strapped to a gurney was likely to trigger a flashback to her childhood rapes. They knew that the State had invoked debunked myths about survivors of sexual violence to discredit Christa's accounts of rape, preventing a fair analysis of her trial lawyers' negligence. Yet the courts did nothing.
We recognize Christa Pike's humanity, her right to d…

To paraphrase Bryan Stevenson, the question right now isn’t whether Christa Pike deserves to die; it’s whether the State of Tennessee deserves to kill. That moral authority has been so manifestly forfeited.

“I am not afraid to die. I’m only nervous about the process.” Just an unbelievable failure of governing and the legal system and basic decency.
Before learning Monday that Lee would not be intervening in her case, Pike wrote in a letter to NBC News, shared by her spiritual adviser:
"Whether my clemency is granted or not, l am at peace."
"I am not afraid to die," wrote Pike, who has been on death row for more than three decades. "I'm only nervous about the process."

A platform displaying the data on US protests from the Crowd Counting Consortium. It includes a map of the US with counts of protest events in circular form overlaying the protests' locations. It also includes weekly tallies of protest events and participations, top protest issues, and various filters allowing users to explore events by location, issue, date, political valence, etc. The top of the image shows a total of 61,782 protests with 14,684,201 participants across 55 US states and territories from January 20, 2025 to May 31, 2026.

Securing this kind of concession from the Chinese right before the midterms should really shore up Trump’s standing with America’s frozen monkey meat exporters.
NYT text: The world's two biggest economies announced separate lists of nonsensitive goods worth $30 billion each that they planned to cut tariffs on, in a bid to ease economic tensions.
Washington's list of Chinese imports eligible for reduced tariffs contained 77 items, including Christmas toys and ornaments, hunting and recreational goods such as fishing hooks and skeet targets, tableware and home appliances, and car seats.
Beijing's list had 1,619 products, including frozen meat from primates and reptiles, live animals such as whales and dugongs, agricultural products including corn and vegetables, and medical devices like X-ray machines, pacemakers, ultrasound equipment and surgical robots.
