One of the lasting impacts of the 2020 pandemic is a collapse in Houston's Metro Rail ridership. The Red line lost its stride, while Purple and Green (and Silver BRT) never had a chance.
Ridership plummets for the red line during the pandemic and only partially recovers

This story by @yjtorbati.bsky.social for @nytimes.com leaves out a critical detail about the "Law of the Sea" Treaty that the US would like Iran to follow re: The Strait of Hormuz. Like Iran, the US never ratified it. www.nytimes.com/2026/04/02/w... www.state.gov/law-of-the-s...

It's been over a year, and I'm still astounded at how terrible Kamala Harris was. Tidbits like this are reminders that Trump didn't win 2024, Harris lost it. Democrats won statewide in Wisconsin, Michigan, North Carolina, Arizona, and Nevada in 2024. Harris was that bad:
Quote from Politico today on the state of the House midterms: "The very reason Democrats hardly need a blue wave to take back the House this time is that their congressional candidates largely outperformed Kamala Harris in last year’s elections."

A trip to Paris is a weird mix of technologies. NFC payments aren't widely accepted, with credit card chip + pin as the backstop that American's don't have. It's like the smart phone revolution quietly skipped this part of the world - with eye opening differences. Some of them good - but v different

I'm very thankful that so many were released today. If you were an Israeli soldier pulled from a tank during a battle, you were a "hostage" and if you were a Palestinian child seized by the IDF without charge you were a "prisoner." I'd love to understand that logic @nytimes.com @nbcnews.com
Most of the released prisoners were residents of Gaza who were detained without charge during the war, including women and children. They were brought to Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, where such large crowds gathered that the buses could barely move down the street.an Israel Defense Forces soldier, was kidnapped from his tank while defending the Nahal Oz base. Earlier this year, his family released video of his capture in an effort to draw attention to his case amid concerns about his health.

This is symptomatic of Biden/Harris holding a pro-Israeli position that was antithetical to their party. Like pro-gun or pro-life Democratics, even when they crafted compromises, they were never going to get credit because they were negotiating on behalf of the wrong team. See: Sinema/Manchin

By law (ACA) 80% of all premiums must be spent on paying for care. Insurance companies deserve a lot of blame, but the increase of premiums is directly tied to the increased cost of the underlying care itself.

Why is Mayor Whitmire breaking the one part of Metro that didn’t need fixing?
Without explanation or warning, Houston changed downtown and midtown traffic signals so that the Red Line light rail is often stuck at red lights.

In the wake of polling last week that showed Democrats viewing Israel through the same lens as apartheid South Africa, multiple leading Democrats are publicly disavowing AIPAC. Today's latest example is McMorrow in Michigan, but it's becoming hard to track all of the pledges.

Aer-Lingus subsidizes the Ireland games to launch new airline routes (Kansas City to Dublin this year). There's no sponsor for this game. How on earth will this financially work?!?!
000
aziz @texasvc.com · 01/10/2025
The deeper I look at this un-sponsored foray by Big XII to host a game in 90K seat Wembley, the more it looks like a disaster. Just look at Kansas attendance. The Aer-Lingus series is paid for by Aer-Lingus because they are launching new airline markets. These are note the same.
000
aziz @texasvc.com · 01/10/2025
The Aer-Lingus games in Dublin are designed to popularize new Aer-Lingus non-stop routes to Dublin. That's it. That's the entire plan. The Big-XII doesn't have a role. This year was for MCI-DUB. Next year is for DFW-DUB. Last year was for ATL-DUB.

Like AM radio and newspapers, it's fascinating to watch the death rattle of broadcast net affiliates. Down 66% since the pre-pandemic high, and basically at its 1994 IPO price. Half of their shrinking revenue is from recarriage rights - ie checks in the mail from cable comps because of a 1992 law.

Companies currently have 3 choices on certain types of employment. Pay an American $200K a year, Pay an H1-B $100K a year, or offshore for <$50K a year. Many companies choose the H-1B option. If we tax the H1-B option $100K a year, which of the remaining two options do you think they will choose?
