Humans have seen mythic figures in bread since we first baked it. There is a whole design language where the front of every consumer vehicle is built around looking like a face with emotion. It’s thing so established it was a background joke in Monsters Inc. AI bros are hoping you fall for this.

Won some random Nvidia trading cards from a Reddit comment giveaway. Didn’t expect them to spent the money to send a large box containing an envelope containing a single ten card booster pack. All the way to the UK from San Jose, CA. The envelope would have done.
A small card booster pack roughly the size of a Pokémon booster pack pinned against an A5 envelope pinned against a medium sized FedEx box.

I’ve been really struggling to sleep with all the brain worms. Catching what kip I can when I feel I can. So it’s at 1:30am when I walk into the bathroom to find that @thepotatocat.bsky.social turned the sink into a makeshift bed for Leon, as the boy is upset over the dog and keeps sleeping in it.
A bathroom sink. Within it a towel has been placed to fill the whole basin, such that you could describe it as a crib blanket. Leon the cat, curled up in the sink as he does. He’s a Maine Coon, and despite being only 9 months old he already fills the whole space of what is not a particularly small basin.

I admit when playing Warframe I didn't expect to see Liz England's door example of game design just outright stated. 10/10 no notes. (No not tagging Liz, this release has been out for a couple years and she's likely already more than aware).
A message in an instant messaging program in the game Waframe. No that the grammar in the message I am about to quote is accurate to that message, the character is one who doesn't care if their sentences run on.

The message states the following:

"okay so how do I communicate what doors are decorative and which ones are just locked and what do i do if one player has a key and the other one doesn't and what do i do if one player goes through a door and the other one doesn't do i like teleport that other player?!?!"

I made the reaper my bitch.
Me, a pale white man with a full mouth goatee, lying in a hospital bed with a bandage around my head. This was a few hours ago not long after surgery as taken by my wife. I’m paler than I usually am in a sickly way, and can barely keep my eyes open.

Surgery soon, so had to visit the mirror universe.
It’s a picture of me! A white man in his late 30s. My greying beard has been shaved into a goatee beard similar to the evil humans from Trek. Or Klingons. Whichever works.

Minor personal milestone: Achieving Lifetime Premium membership in Nexus Mods from mod downloads. Apparently I ticked over this in August but completely missed the notifications to enable it. Most of it is a small but important Fallout 4 mod, but I'm glad I've helped tune the games of others.

You undersell this so hard.
Text in the publisher field of a steam game:

“It was a dark night after a storm and I had been torn apart from the despair of realizing I needed money to make video games. In my depression, I gazed upon a pristine pool of water on the sidewalk and a beautiful expression gazed back; every inch of his beauty encapsulated in the tiny portal to the realm blessed by his mortal presence.

He pulled out his phone with grace and I followed suit - logging onto my bank account and showing that I had money saved up. With his delicate finger he pointed at the number written on the savings account. "This is our budget for the game", his silk-like voice rang. And thus, through his sheer wisdom, the funding for the game was secured.

Despite never seeing that absolute sage of a man ever again, I still consider him and his insight into the solution for my troubles deeply integral to the development of this game, and thus, he, in spirit, is my publisher.”

Both game are also somewhat less 16:9 friendly than the first - though obviously this isn't the fault of the team, why would they aim for a format that basically didn't exist at home in the 90s? The culling is much more aggressive and snips the sides off, especially in "heavy" terrain scenes.
A terrain heavy level from Colony Wars Vengeance showing how the geometry culling is removing geometry from the left side of the screen despite being in view.

On the right side of the screen is a large green graphical artefact which is also due to this culling.

Jon Tetrino @tetrino.com · 20/02/2026
Both Vengeance and Red Sun continue with the "extended cockpit geometry" view to allow some cockpit motion. Of note here is how the UI in Red Sun is not diegetic. While the UI in the in-ship view is firmly planted to the meshes, in RS it is a separate overlay layer that more or less lines up.
A slightly zoomed out shot of a cockpit from Red Sun, showing how the user interface for ship status, weapon selection and so on is in the same location on the screen despite no longer aligning with the base mesh of the cockpit.A zoomed out shot of the cockpit view in Colony Wars Vengeance. The user interface for things such as ship status, weapon select and so on is attached to the geometry and thus is moved away from the camera as we zoom out.
120
Jon Tetrino @tetrino.com · 20/02/2026
Similar to the first game, the ships are handled in a geometry pass independent of the camera position. So as you can see in the first picture above (copied here for convenience) when you bring the camera out, they're not effected by the change in position and look giant compared to the skybox.
The space image from above, of note in this context is the seemingly giant ship to the right of the image, vastly larger than the skybox in this zoomed out perspective.

Jon Tetrino @tetrino.com · 20/02/2026
On a personal note I find the sequels worse than the original. This is just preference but I find the sound design and visual flare of the two lacking compared to the original. However they did pull a lot of tricks for both. For instance ground terrain and big set piece textures were both skyboxed!
A screenshot of Colony Wars Vengeance, with the camera zoomed far backwards beyond the normal bounds. Of note is the big planet texture of the mission being part of the skybox, as expected of the era.A second shot zoomed out of colony wars vengence. This time around in an atmospheric mission, the skybox is directly rendering the false terrain of a planet as part of it, rather than said terrain being handled separately as a "real" object.

Duckstation also gives you some rudamentary freecam tools, which I am still working out, and they show that they really did extended the hud geometry further than you'd think for ship cockpits. We'll never get a remaster or remake, but this is nice to know about and play around with!
A screenshot of Colony Wars with the camera zoomed much further back than the player "eyes" typically would be. This shows the amount of unused cockpit geometry in the game, typically invisible from the player in regular play.

Jon Tetrino @tetrino.com · 14/02/2026
So I've been mucking around with Duckstation's 16:9 rendering mode and it turns out that Colony Wars, a classic PSX space shooter in the realm of Wing Commander, not only works really well in 16:9 but also has enough extra geometry in the interface that I'd believe you if you said it was intended.
An example screenshot of Colony Wars for the Playstation 1 in 4:3 standard aspect ratio. The same screenshot as the first but rendered in 16:9 aspect ratio and resolution. Notably, there is considerable extra and detailed geometry visible that the player would never typically see on the original hardware.A 4:3 screenshot of colony wars taken from the third person perspective of your space ship. On the left side is a pair of ships near the edge of the screen, whereas on the right is a space station.

The space station is cut off by the 4:3 ratio. The same as the other third person screenshot, this time in 16:9 view (and slightly moved due to the nature of the game capture). The station on the right side has a lot more in view, whereas the left side now shows the main star of the skybox.

This advertisement pisses me off so much from a material science perspective, let alone actually being factually wrong. There is another one saying that the nibs never wear down which is such a lie that they supply spare nibs when you buy the damn thing.

I’m a pointless human being with no insight worth a damn. I’m a fraud with no history to speak of other than several chances I wasted and mistakes I’ve made. My only saving grace is that I’m trying my best, and I doubt I’m even doing that anymore. Douglas, my cat, doesn’t care about any of that.

It looked like this. The first version anyway - despite low sales they made a second version to try and fix the issues of the first! You had to hold the thin side (opposite the curved side) to your head to take calls so it looked like a banana. Silly design.

Douglas is an 8KG Maine Coon that is physically larger than our 9 year old cocker spaniel. Douglas likes to sleep in the garden. Douglas has a habit of waking up after being in the rain for a long time, as it takes that long for the wet to hit the skin. Douglas just jumped on my sleeping head.
