Il faisait beau cette semaine pour une petite aventure à vélo autour de #Genève. Depuis #Annemasse (c'était la première fois que j'emmenais mon vélo dans le train), à travers la campagne, le long du lac #Léman, puis en montant le téléphérique du #Salève, avant de redescendre à vélo.

La récente #piétonnisation des rues d' #Annecy suscite un certain scepticisme, mais Annecy lutte depuis des décennies contre les voitures envahissantes. J’ai fait une petite promenade et visité des endroits qui étaient encore bondées de voitures il n'y a pas si longtemps. 🧵

This rare example of a guillotine, whose few preserved original elements have been incorporated into this early 20th century restoration, recalls Geneva's annexation to France from 1798 to 1814. Established as the prefecture of the Léman department, the city found itself endowed with this macabre apparatus, installed by revolutionary France as a less painful means of executing the condemned. Contemporaries of this machine, invented by surgeon Antoine Louis and defended by French politician Guillotin, after whom it was named, saw it as an improvement. Its use declined drastically when Geneva joined the Swiss Confederation in 1815, but continued until 1862. The death penalty was abolished in Geneva in 1871, that is, 110 years before France.

I was surprised to see this little guy coming at me on the bike path, but I have seen several since, and learned they are not uncommon in the Netherlands.
