A cartoon by Terry Anderson, contrasting the human impulses of visual art going back to the Stone Age and synthetic images produced and generative A.I.Six cartoons by Terry Anderson, focusing upon: record summer temperatures
in Europe; Keir Starmer’s ousting as UK prime minister in favour of Andy Burnham; the insubstantial nature of the “MOU” between Iran and the USA; the quick succession of seven people to lead the UK in a decade; the chummy relationship between FIFA president Gianni Infantino & President Donald Trump; the condition of the “Reflecting Pool” in Washington, DC.

I drew this in the winter of 2001/02. It ran in Dark Horse Comics’ 9/11 anthology with colours by Dave Stewart. Sad to see how little has changed in Scotland and the wider world, and indeed what’s markedly worse 25 years after these events.

So it was nice to be asked back & draw members of Botswana, Sierra Leonne, South Africa, and Trinidad & Tobago’s teams as well as local volunteers. Don’t get inky fingers as often as I once did, for various reasons, but it’s still very apparent to me that few things connect like a live drawing.

Glaringly obvious A.I. title sequence for the Commonwealth Games. Such an insult. Scotland, and Glasgow especially abounds in animators, graphic designers, cartoonists… Maddening.
Screenshot from the animated title sequence of Channel 5’s television broadcast of the XXIII Commonwealth Games. A typically overwrought A.I. generated image of two female basketball competitors, playing on a (Scottish?) village street with a hoop installed in the middle of the thoroughfare.

Seen this doing the rounds again. Appreciate the sentiment & agree with the point, i.e. like many (most) profile pic trends, the latest rush for ChatGPT “caricatures” was all about data harvesting. But question an anti-A.I. treatise very obviously illustrated, probably written using generative A.I.
Screen grab of a Facebook post from “The Driver’s Side” stating “The AI cartoon trend is the biggest data grab of 2026” and illustrated with a large spread of typically unpleasant, samey, yellow-tinged, AI-generated images.

1984, folks.

1. If we all get through the next ten years together & future generations have any interest at all in reviving what was once called journalism, summer 2025 needs studied in the 101 block. 2. If I didn’t have to keep my nose more than ordinarily clean, the tv licence would be punted into the sea.
Screen grab of BBC News headline pertaining to far-right protest at a hotel used to accommodate asylum seekers in Perth, Scotland.
In one breath it contradicts itself. The lede is “Hundreds at protests over asylum hotels in Perth”; the subheading reads “About 150 protestors and 250 counter protestors held signs and chanted outside of the Radisson Blu hotel.”
The accompanying photo is, predictably, of individual from the smaller group. White males of various ages hold signs bearing racist slogans and the Union Flag under the gaze of a police officer.

What the fuck are you talking about, other than providing grounds for instant deselection?
Mark Sewards MP breathlessly describes the “A.I.” version of himself that will be available to constituents “24/7”. Evidently fully on board with his leader’s blithe, heedless shilling for big tech overlords, he claims “the AI revolution is happening and we must embrace it to see how it can be useful, in all sectors.” The visual is of a white male in that overly rich, cod-Pixar style that is the default setting for such pointless digital filler.Mark Sewards MP clarifies that his “A.I.” counterpart is in fact the only thing it possibly can be i.e. a glorified chat-bot, reassuring the reader that it “can’t ever replace any of the other work I do.”

This framing is drivel bordering on nonsense. Employers and their funders don’t “pay” us to do anything other than our work duties. Whether there’s a conflict between those obligations and what we do in life off the clock is a wholly different and highly subjective matter.

Alright, Terry coded characters.
Wile E. Coyote (Looney Tunes) – a creature of esoteric appetites bordering on monomania, consistently let down, endangered, and injured by capitalism. All tactics, no strategy.Jon Arbuckle (Garfield) – well meaning but irretrievably dorky cartoonist, whose care-giving responsibilities spell his doom. The Mayor of Halloween Town (The Nightmare Before Christmas) – effusive functionary one minute, anxiety riddled wreck the next.Duck (Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared) – a supercilious prick with an obvious inferiority complex, making the best of it while trapped in hell.

The “offensive” article in question. If enough readers complained about a singular column or feature would the paper’s publisher likewise conclude that journalism had “run its course”? Woeful. 2/2
Black & white editorial cartoon by Lee Judge and distributed by King Features, appearing in the print edition of the Latrobe Bulletin Jan 16, 2025.
Beneath the tagline “The proper way to fly a flag on Trump’s inauguration day” a drawing of the White House depicts the US national flag flying inverted, a traditional signal of distress.
This cartoon was deemed sufficiently “offensive” for the paper to cease publication of editorial cartoons entirely.

This statement, published yesterday in the Latrobe Bulletin is wrongheaded at best, craven & mercenary at worst. Have they any human employees or is it all AI; how else does “offensive” material “slip through” then go unremarked for 48hrs? Certainly no-one there comprehends the Streisand Effect. 1/2
Statement from the publisher, Latrobe Bulletin, 01/18/25 – “We apologize today for letting such an offensive cartoon slip through our editorial process and into our Editorial page of Volume 123 - Issue No. 20, Thursday, Jan. 16, 2025.
While political cartoons have run in newspapers, including the Latrobe Bulletin, for many years; this is a final example of how we feel they have run their course.”

The community this tedious gasbag claims to represent best are palpably upset and he can’t help but gainsay. But what else is new? No-one is saying Telnaes had her fundamental rights injured, but the whole incident is most definitely indicative of a wider malaise & chilling of free expression.
Via an X post, shop owner and pub bore Dr Timothy Benson dispenses his wisdom over the resignation of cartoonist Ann Telnaes from The Washington Post, saying that “no-one has a right to be published” (unquestionably true) and that “no cartoonist has ever succeeded in having a cartoon published that ridicules their proprietor” (impossible to prove). Benson describes the reaction as “hysteria”; like all centrists, he’s a pill.

All the love sloshing around for The Muppets Christmas Carol is fair enough, but the film’s associated imagery is marred by the presence of the plump, “beaked” looking Kermit that prevailed in a lot of late-era Henson material. Give me the half-empty, scrunched up frog every time.
Photo of Kermit the Frog, dressed in Victorian era clothing, as the character appeared in the role of Bob Cratchit in the 1992 film “The Muppet Christmas Carol” based on Charles Dickens’ novella. Since this is a publicity photo and not a still image from the film itself, the figure is not strictly speaking a puppet (or Muppet), but rather an articulated model that can be posed accordingly. Since there is no hand within, the frog has an over-stuffed appearance not normally seen when performed by a puppeteer.Still image of Kermit the Frog, as performed by Jim Henson from “The Muppet Show”, 1976. Henson is “scrunching” the head and face of the hand puppet from within, giving Kermit a comically disgusted expression.

Alas, bill HR 9495 went through, in a situation that’s comparable to this moment from The Simpsons, reversed.

Cartoon of repellent white supremacist and fascist Steve Bannon; three symbolic figures – Uncle Sam representing the USA, Marianne representing France, and Britannia representing the UK – are depicted in a fit of nausea by the presence of the smelly, corpulent, hideous troll Bannon, who wears a badge saying “racist”, just as he declared people should wear “with pride” in a speech to French National Rally members in 2018.
