Happy heavenly birthday to #WarnerBros #LooneyTunes #animator, Chuck Jones, born today in 1912. His "rules" for the #RoadRunner / #Coyote relationship still resonate today.
RULE 1.
THE ROAD RUNNER CANNOT HARM THE COYOTE EXCEPT BY GOING "ВЕЕР-BEEP!"
RULE 2.
NO OUTSIDE FORCE CAN HARM THE COYOTE - ONLY HIS OWN INEPTITUDE OR THE FAILURE OF THE ACME PRODUCTS.
RULE 3.
THE COYOTE COULD STOP ANYTIME - IF HE WERE NOT A FANATIC.
(REPEAT: "A FANATIC IS ONE WHO REDOUBLES HIS EFFORT WHEN HE HAS FORGOTTEN HIS AIM." -GEORGE SANTAYANA)
RULE 4.
NO DIALOGUE EVER, EXCEPT "ВЕЕР-BEEP!" RULES.
THE ROAD RUNNER MUST STAY ON THE ROAD - OTHERWISE, LOGICALLY, HE WOULD NOT BE CALLED ROAD RUNNER.
RULE 6.
ALL ACTION MUST BE CONFINED TO THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT OF THE TWO CHARACTERS - THE SOUTHWEST AMERICAN DESERT.
RULE 7.
ALL MATERIALS, TOOLS, WEAPONS, OR MECHANICAL CONVENIENCES MUST BE OBTAINED FROM THE ACME CORPORATION.
RULE 8.
WHENEVER POSSIBLE, MAKE GRAVITY THE COYOTE'S GREATEST ENEMY.
RULE 9.
THE COYOTE IS ALWAYS MORE HUMILIATED THAN HARMED BY HIS FAILURES.

In Gabriella Saab’s The Survivors Guild, the Titanic is not so much a ship as a threshold. We know before the first page turns what history has already decided. The iceberg, the lifeboats, the black water, the terrible arithmetic of class and chance. But Gabriella’s novel begins where the familiar story usually ends, with the living required to become human again.

Remembering #DollyParton. terryshepherd.substack.com/p/rememberin...
If there was ever an illustration of the best an American can be, Dolly exemplified it. She lived in that magical intersection of purpose, passion and talent where happiness lives. In a time where there are so many bad actors in positions of fame and temporary power, may we all incorporate the best of who Dolly Parton was in our own lives to honor her memory.

I think she’d love that.

In Elizabeth Crowens’ fiction, the past is a crowded workplace filled with temperamental stars, frightened executives, recycled scenery, and people trying to finish the day before somebody gets killed. Hear our convo: open.substack.com/pub/terryshe...
Elizabeth Crowens’ latest novel, Round Up the Unusual Suspects is the third installment in her classic-Hollywood detective series. Its setting is the Warner Brothers lot in 1942, where “Casablanca” is being assembled from fog, plywood, borrowed sets, and uncertainty. When a stagehand is murdered on the soundstage, Jack L. Warner calls upon private investigators Babs Norman and Guy Brandt. Their assignment is to identify the killer without interrupting production, a reminder that, in Hollywood, death may be tragic, but delays are unforgivable.
Babs and Guy are former actors, though not especially successful ones. Their partnership began in a cemetery, over a lunch composed of food they had not precisely purchased. After protecting Humphrey Bogart during an earlier adventure, they have earned a place in the studio’s unofficial emergency services. This time, they enlist members of the “Casablanca” company in a mystery that gradually expands beyond the usual collection of grudges, affairs, and contractual resentments.

Fewer than half of all adults report reading a book of any kind in the last year. Here's why you should keep writing. terryshepherd.substack.com/p/why-good-w...
If you read the recent article in The Atlantic about the sharp decline in reader interest in books since 2003, you may share my trepidation for the future of The Writer’s Craft.

Rose Horowitch writes that the Library of Alexandria did not need a single great fire to become a tragedy. It may have died more quietly than legend allows. Scroll by scroll. Shelf by shelf. Copy by copy. The papyrus aged. The insects came. The scribes stopped reproducing the texts. The will to preserve knowledge faded, and what should have been carried forward was left to disappear.

That is the warning for us now.

Steven Rubin’s The Unraveling of Michael Galler begins not with a monster in the room but with an absence. Michael is eight years old when his mother dies of cancer. From that point forward the world becomes a place where invisible things gather strength in silence. Childhood, Steven tells me, is not merely a landscape of baseball gloves, schoolbooks, and family dinners. It is a laboratory in which grief becomes theory. And theory becomes fate.
