Quilting, mostly

This is so true! I have a "one quilt per person per lifetime" rule with two modifiers: (1) future repairs are included with the quilt and (2) if the quilt cannot be repaired, it will be replaced.

It looks fantastic. Hand work isn't supposed to look perfect. It's supposed to look human. Take a break and rest a bit. It's easier if you aren't tired or aching.

I just did the opposite this week: blew my quilting budget on a bunch of yarn.

The quilting is well done! It looks so cozy.

Absolutely! Progress over perfection. Nobody can improve without freedom to make ugly stuff first. Plus, once you wash it, it all just crinkles up into a cozy happy quilt and you will wonder why you thought it was ugly

The way I cackled at that last sentence... I can apply it to almost every sewing lesson I've learned.

This is exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing more of it!

The Arthur pants are dope. Easy and interesting to wear. You can also start with the easier elastic waist and move up to the zippered fly

"I plan to keep it super simple..." That's what I always tell myself until I start the project and start wondering "maybe I should try X" or "wouldn't it look cool with Y." 🤣

This view is the inspiration for the quilt. The tree outside my apartment window blooms yellow every spring and the goldfinches like to hide in it. When the green leaves take over, the goldfinches stop coming.

"Forsythia" I wanted the quilt to evoke the feeling of a tree in bloom. I used hundreds of squares, measuring between 1 and 8 inches each, in a spectrum of yellows. I think it succeeds in walking the line between abstraction and specificity without being too literal. #modernquilting #quilting

That is amazing! I love this. Just start sewing bits together. You'll either find it interesting and want to do more or decide that cutting up fabric into pieces only to sew them back together is a drag. 😅

The easiest way to start is to start: take a bit of fabric and sew it to another bit of fabric. 😅 You can learn techniques as you go. Patterns and planning are optional. You really only *need* fabric, thread, needle, scissors, and an iron to get started.

Silk chiffon has the soul of a demon: incorporeal and tortuous. But you can tame it with a soak in gelatin or starch. It really helps.

I'm quite partial to these blue ones. It's delightful how different stars cut from one fabric can look. Liberty is a great choice for EPP.

I'm convinced that the only reason why I start another quilt is the immediate amnesia that sets in after I finish one - wiping out the memory of the time, tedium, and struggle that went into it.

Drunkard's path quilt in red and pink. Another exercise in a limited color palette, traditional quilting patterns, and curved piecing. I should have foreseen that it would look like pepperoni on pizza. 60"x60" #modernquilting #drunkardspath

You know how repeating a word makes it lose meaning and seem nonsensical? That's how I feel about color after trying to explore it. "What is turquoise and teal?" I don't know. But here's the quilt I came up with. #modernquilting #halfsquaretriangle
Quilt made from half square triangles in shades of blue-green, ranging from deep teal to pale aqua and quilted with giant seaweed motifs

I started with the flying geese in the center. After making about 120, I got tired of it and put it away until the motivation returned. It never did. I finally sewed them together last month and added a wide border - an oversized log cabin.

I keep calling this my "Rock Quilt" in my head. I assigned myself a design challenge to use: (1) a non preferred color palette; (2) larger scale shapes; and (3) improvise curves. It's about 60"x70", but feels like a little sketch. #improvquilt #modernquilting

Does anybody have a recommendation for an affordable and reliable mid- or long-arm quilting machine? I don't need any bells and whistles: just a roomy throat length and clearance. I bought a Little Rebel last year. It's broken down twice in the first 14 months I've had it. I'm so annoyed.

Amazing. Pre-interfaced satin sounds like a game changer for heavy linings. This is going to be an incredible cape!

Terrorsaurus Dax @terrorsaurusdax.bsky.social · 11/03/2026
This is SO beautiful! You've put so much thought into details. What's the interlining between the lining and fabric? It looks so plush that I'm assuming there's some interlining here.

My inside voice shouts "That's a COLLAGE - NOT A QUILT!" I like collage. But collage is not quilting.

Making quilts is largely an exercise in self-delusion and stubbornness. I always think my next project won't take very long.

I really enjoy comparing the work in progress with the final. Quilting is such a process-oriented medium. The quilting and binding transforms the pieces in surprising and interesting ways. It adds something in the textured overlay and removes details like seams.

I forgot to share this one earlier: Butler Valley, AZ (Fondamonte), completed Sept 2025. The first of the "land use policy" series. Maybe I should think of a less dry-sounding title for the series? It makes it sound so boring. #landscapequilt #modernquilt

"Exurbia" (from the ongoing Land Use Policy series): a quilted meditation on housing growth through subdividing land. The straight line cuts break the fabric. But the fabrics continue to change and increase in complexity with those cuts. #modernquilt #landscapequilt

I just finished binding this second iteration of the Declaration of Independence. I think I'm going to push the next version towards increased verisimilitude and legibility on the next version. #protestquilt

That's very true about needing time. I think it came out different from my expectations. I think I'll need the time to release those expectations and look at it with a different perspective.

I like to work in variations on a theme. I made the blue and white double wedding ring on the left in 2024. It reminded me of plates, so I tried inserting gold like kintsugi on the second one (on the right). I guess the series is still in progress... #doubleweddingring #quilt

I'm disappointed. It isn't what I hoped for. I've been dragging my feet on quilting and then binding it. It's fine. It's just not exciting or interesting. I wanted it to evoke china plates and kintsugi. Maybe I need to simplify it further? Fewer fabrics next time? #doubleweddingring #dwrquilt

I'm intrigued by this thesis because the nude female form represented in classical through baroque eras often look like male bodies with two scoops of ice cream appended to symbolize breasts.

Argh. This title makes me rage. "Even the quilters"? Quilting has been one of the only acceptable forms of political expression and activism for women for centuries. The history of the craft is steeped in protest. The title should have been "even the cat butt drumming communities."
