If you want to know anything about me: I allowed myself 15 minutes to walk to the bus stop, which is actually a 3 minute walk from home. #weekwithoutdriving #cville

My 2 weird things from yesterday: (1) Watched episode 1 of new TV series Line of Fire. The first seconds label where the scene is set: #Crozet VA. Although obviously not filmed here. (2) CVS class action settlement where I could get $10 after doing a bunch of work to prove eligible. Not worth it.

I signed up for Week without Driving. Being in #Crozet that's just not happening unless I play hermit all week, but my goal is to finally ride the Crozet Connect bus. Since it's oriented towards commuters, I can arrive at the downtown at about 9 and leave for home just before 4.

Emptying all kitchen cupboards in preparation for painters coming tomorrow. I found an unopened can of Maxwell House "Best by Jun 2005" which I threw away. It's not even why has it been in kitchen so long, but why did I bring it from NJ when we moved in 2014?

“The Government is unlikely to succeed on the merits of its challenge to the District Court’s preliminary injunction,” the court said in a brief, unsigned order. “And the equitable factors applicable for obtaining emergency relief from this Court do not favor a stay.”

25 years ago I was stuck on the approach to the Outerbridge listening to an audiobook and wondering what truck had glommed up traffic so I wasn't going to get to work.I could see there were people sitting atop their cars up on the bridge so it must be quite an accident.

Today's pet peeve: apps that want me to upgrade to a costlier option, and ask "are you sure" when I decline, with the two options of "remind me later" or "continue". No. I mean no now and later.

Possibly my favorite #hymn line is "All that borrow life from thee are ever in thy care," but I wish I didn't sing it to myself every time I squash a bug.

When I was a kid in the 60s in a south Florida suburb, we played kickball in the street all the time. It was a through street; when a car came by it slowed down and the kids oozed out of the way. www.theatlantic.com/family/archi...

This week's Bellair Farm CSA offering of eggplant, squash, tomatoes, and onion meets up with rosemary, thyme, and basil from our garden, plus my last can of covid-era panic-buying garbanzos to make a wonderful ratatouille with crispy chickpeas for dinner
Dinner table set for 2 with a dish of ratatouille in the center and a small bowl of chickpeas to its side. The places are set with white plates holding a roll.

I just finished reading 1491 by Charles C Mann and, holy cow, it's fascinating how different its view is from what I was taught in the 60s & 70s about pre-Columbian Americas. I'm digesting and will need to research a bit about how accepted it is. www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/107178...

I don't understand why it is so hard to find the answer to "How much rain did we get yesterday?" I understand NWS is the official source but I can't figure out how to read their web pages. Where else can I look? Weather Underground said 0" which is obviously not right.

Congratulations, Virginia wine country. 🍾 We are fortunate in Charlottesville to be surrounded by the Monticello AVA and its talented winemakers. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Virginia wines, particularly those from the Monticello AVA which surrounds Charlottesville, win accolades in Paris, out-ranking French wines of the same varietals in blind tasting at Le Cordon BleuMichael Shaps winery wins top honors for Chardonnay and petit Manseng; Valley Road vineyard wins for Cabernet franc; King Family Vineyards “Heritage” wins Bordeaux style. Central Virginia wines are judged to be superior to French wines.

There are/have been traffic calming studies in #crozet where the people living on those streets say "What's taking so long? Just put in speed bumps!" I hope some of them see this video. (Although I do join in the "What's taking so long?" sentiment.)

It's my third morning in a row doing trail work. I love the look of nice wide newly mowed trail. #Crozet trails are looking good. Dry weather is helping, tbh.

BREAKING: Georgia lawmakers have taken redistricting off the table as a result of public pressure. The state will no longer consider a new, racist map that would have diluted Black voting power. This victory makes it loud and clear: Our demands are working.

I had my first cataract surgery today. I had no idea I was seeing the world thru a green-yellow filter. This means I have to start all over choosing the right white to paint my kitchen cabinets. And there's about 743 different kinds of white out there.

It's at least 30 yrs since I first went to Canada and was impressed that waiters in every restaurant bring the little machine to your table to pay instead of carrying off your credit card. Just back from a week in Ontario, and am struck at my first meal in the U.S. that we still haven't caught up.

Trying to pack for a bike tour Toronto to Montreal and my lack of weather imagination is making it impossible for me to decide what I need. Does forecast hi of 68° mean I'll be cold or warm, and for how much of the day? 73°? It's gonna be a wild guess and seesawing temps at home do not help.

Staying in a hotel and asked where nearby to go for a drink. I put the suggestion into Google Maps; it is .1 mile away & the suggested walking route was about 3/4 mile. Google doesn't know there are always social paths connecting parking lots. But I'm smarter. It was less than a 3 block walk.

Today I went to Lesesne State Forest to see a grove of chestnut trees. I'm not posting a photo b/c if I wasn't actually looking at chestnut trees I don't want to know. I often think about how I was born too late to see the mountains covered with chestnuts, and too early to see them return.

I write notes in random notepads that then disappear for a while. Today I reached for one in my desk drawer to make some notes from a phone conversation. When I was finished, I turned the page back. I have no clue when or why I wrote this one but now I want a donut.
