#OTD 110 Years ago the Battle of the Somme began. Thousands of men went over the top spurred on by the expectation of victory & to be in Berlin by Xmas. Many would only make it just yards out of their trench. By nightfall there would be over 57,000 casualties, nearly 20,000 had been killed #ww1

Thats sad as there is a wonderful diorama in there showing the training camps, Pow camps & hospitals. You go up camp road then turn onto Chase Road..park at the Glaciel Boulder car park. Camp began there.Walk up the road & camp was on left & right,lots of remains on right. Also Freda's grave there

A wet & blustery walk today in the local park. Noticed this tree & plaque planted by the Duchess of Albany at the opening of the park in October 1883. Sadly 5 months later in 1884 the Duke, Prince Leopold Queen Victoria's 8th & youngest child, would die after a fall whilst in Cannes #LocalHistory

Out for drinks in Manchester last night & I had to pause at the #ww1 memorial in the now Britannia Hotel, back then it was a warehouse of S & J Watts.The 'Sentry',by Charles Jagger,stands opposite the memorial to those who fell during the war. Suspect many are 18th Manchester's Warehousemen & Clerks
