Because of you, TIFO goes into the next chapter stronger. Every dollar is at work — in the science, the students, the field teams, the communities. All of it compounds. All of it happens because of people like you. Thank you. From Moscow, Idaho, to the world. — The TIFO Team #TIFO #ScienceForGood

We are overwhelmed with gratitude. 💚 Your generosity raised $10,290 — and with a 2:1 match, that's $30,870 in total impact for science that serves people everywhere. Thank you for believing that science belongs wherever it's needed most. #ScienceForGood #TIFO

🧵 6/7 Faith's challenge to the room: stop thinking about this as just law or politics. It's a human issue. Who bears the cost of extraction? Whose backyard? Under whose laws? Should it be a community in Congo — or children in Idaho? Mining CAN be done safely and responsibly.

🧵 4/7 Now we're in a declared National Energy Emergency, and the push is to bring supply chains home — fast. But Faith's point: a mine can take 20–40 years from exploration to production in the U.S. You can't emergency-order your way around that.
100
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
🧵 3/7 After the Clean Air & Water Acts in the 1970s, mining got expensive in the U.S. — so many companies moved abroad. The result? Lower regulatory costs for them. But public health risks don't disappear — they just follow the mining to communities with fewer protections and less healthcare.
100
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 17/03/2026
🧵 2/7 The U.S. still runs on the 1872 Mining Law — written before the light bulb existed. It allows mining companies to extract riches on public lands without paying taxpayers and leaving the mess for taxpayers to clean up. Dozens of attempts to reform it have failed.

🧵 4/6 This is why environmental health work matters. Pollution from pesticides, heavy metals, and industrial activities doesn’t just harm communities today—it can create lasting health burdens across generations.

🧵 6/7 Another example of possibility is Canada’s commitment to aligning its mining laws with the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Free, prior, and informed consent isn’t just an international standard — it’s a model the US can follow.
120
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
🧵 5/7 Racheal also describes a developing partnership with Integra Gold as genuinely refreshing — a company that came to the tribe *before* making plans, asking how to do this right.
100
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
🧵 4/7 So what can change look like? Racheal laid out a compelling case for a tribal mining tax — modeled on existing formulas — to be distributed across Nevada’s 27 tribes. A 2% tax from just *one* mine could generate ~$29M. That is one mine, in one state.
100
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
🧵 3/7 U.S. mining law has not been updated since 1872. $7.7 billion is extracted from traditional indigenous lands annually. Tribes receive zero compensation. And not many people realize that state tax dollars stop at reservation borders. Changes are long overdue.
100
Terragraphics International Foundation @terrafound.bsky.social · 13/03/2026
🧵 2/7 Racheal outlined how her community on the Duck Valley Indian Reservation has lived with the consequences of mining's legacy for generations — being directly downstream of a superfund site - compounded by other environmental contamination factors such as a hydrocarbon plume and Agent Orange.
