Because the questions rattling around in our heads all day long - inspired by the sun, the weather, Homo sapiens or science news - need to have their answers teased out through drama. Written drama.

Text:
'Why write speculative fiction?'
I started writing speculative fiction in an attempt to come to terms with the grief I experienced after the passing of my father. I hold to no organised religion, but would say I'm spiritual, and believe there is more to us than just flesh and bone. As for the more fantastical parts of speculative fiction, who doesn't enjoy an escape from the mundane? I think Roald Dahl put it best - "Those who don't believe in magic will never find it."

Text: What’s something interesting about you?
Answer: I love languages but get too excited learning new ones to really get fluent. I speak not-very-good conversational Māori (luckily my partner and kids kōrero Māori so I can't get too slack); I speak pretty-bad Bokmål Norske, and I am currently learning Scottish Gælic, which I think is the worst I have ever been at a language.

What is your writing secret?
My writing secret is that I don’t believe in writer’s block! I do believe in tricky parts, and when I hit them, I know I need to give them space to allow my brain to figure out the problem. I do this either by turning to a different manuscript and allowing my subconscious to figure it out, or if I have a deadline and I need to push through, I go for a walk or do an activity - without an earbud in my ear to distract my mind from ticking over and figuring things out. Essentially, I’m problem solving in my mind, playing the scenes out like a movie, and inevitably, the solutions always come to me.

Text:
What is the secret to good writing?
The secret, really, is to write. Just write. Keep writing. That’s the only way to get better; the only way to figure things out is to write through them and into them and around them. And read, too, of course. Read widely, read often.
